What's on TV? January 16, 1960

We're back in another issue of TV Guide from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and as such I don't have a lot of local background to add. In a few more years, as I learn more about the history behind the television of my new home town, I expect this to change - but in the meantime, take a look at the listings from Saturday, January 16, 1960, and enjoy!

  1. A couple of odds & ends from your end:

    - Noting that Channel 10 in Waco, though mainly CBS, has a secondary with ABC.
Thus, Lawrence Welk displaces Have Gun Will Travel (to an hour later) and Mr. Lucky (to some other night?). Also 21 Beacon Street is picked up from the previous Sunday's ABC lineup.

    - On indie Channel 11, there's International Detective, from about a half-decade earlier.
This was a syndicated cheapie, filmed in Europe for no budget by Hollywood old-timer Eddie Sutherland, and based on "the files of the Burns Detective Agency" (it says here).
The leading man was a New York actor/announcer who was still finding his way in the business in the mid-'50s - Arthur Fleming (yes, that Art Fleming).
One of our local UHF stations picked this one up circa 1969 or so; I was a little surprised that ch44 didn't run promos showing Art Fleming's detective "in jeopardy!" all over the world.
    Obvious, huh?

    - Playboy's Penthouse, seen in syndie on ch11, aired live-on-tape in Chicago on Channel 7-ABC at 11:30 pm. Dallas got it on a week's delay; the new Chicago airing featured singers Dick Haymes and Fran Jeffries (married at the time), the Kai Winding jazz septet, artist Leroy Neiman - and Chatter the Chimp (see my comment in the previous entry).
See how all this ties together?

  2. Welcome to the DFW metroplex! Meant to say that earlier. :)

Well, I wasn't alive yet in 1960, but am familiar with local history dating back to the early 1970's. Channel 11 was the dominant independent station for many years as KTVT before becoming affiliated with CBS about 20 years ago. Channel 4 KDFW was the CBS affiliate for the longest time as well, until switching to Fox around 1994.

Note that Channel 10 from Waco, while affiliated with CBS mostly, did eschew CBS' Mr. Lucky and moved both Perry Mason and Wanted: Dead or Alive back an hour in order to air ABC's Lawrence Welk as a lead-in to Gunsmoke (which Welk's show usually competed with in 1959-60). Temple's Channel 6 did no similar tampering with NBC's regular lineup.

Channels 5 and 8 remain NBC and ABC affiliates respectively to this day.

  3. I've lived in the DFW area and watched tv here since fall 1988, and I was in Waco back to 1983 for college. KDFW & KTVT did the Fox/CBS affiliate switch on July 1, 1995, and it also involved KDAF 33 (the former Fox affiliate that switched to WB), and KXTX 39 (which was DFW's original WB affiliate and is now DFW's Telemundo affiliate). I worked on KDFW-TV's Children's Miracle Network Telethon in June 1995, late in its period as a CBS affiliate.
When I arrived in Waco for college in 1983, KWTX-TV was primarily an ABC affiliate, probably due to ABC's leading ratings starting in the late 70s, though it still carried Cronkite's nightly CBS newscast. As CBS' ratings improved in the early 80s, KWTX switched back to primary CBS, and ABC decided to go over to KCEN-TV, which had been with NBC all its 30 years on the air, full-time, leaving Waco-Temple with no NBC affiliate at all. We couldn't even see NBC on campus, since KXAS-TV was carried on cable channel 10, back in the days of cable over tv dials, and it was washed out by the local signal from KWTX. The Cosby Show was the hottest new show on tv fall 1984, and we couldn't see it thanks to this mixup. KXXV-TV, a brand new station on channel 25, went on the air in March 1985, affiliated with NBC, so we could see NBC again. NBC, whose ratings were improving greatly by fall 1985, took back KCEN and dumped KXXV after just 6 months. KXXV affiliated with ABC, and the local affiliations are still the same in Waco, with KWKT-TV, channel 44, affiliating with Fox (somewhere I have on tape Matthew Perry, at the time on a 1988 Fox sitcom Boys Will Be Boys, in a local promo for KWKT). Later after I left Waco there was a new station on channel 62 originally affiliated with UPN & WB (KAKW-TV), but it changed to an Univision affiliation after a couple years.

  4. Not surprised that KRLD carried the CBS NHL game between Chicago and Detroit, since I believe the Dallas/Fort Worth area long had minor-league teams with huge fanbases before the NHL's Dallas Stars came to town.

Of course, there were just six NHL teams back then.
