What's on TV? Monday, July 23, 1956

If you hadn't already noticed by reading Saturday's piece, the stations this week have some very interesting call letters. There's WLW-D in Dayton, WLW-C in Columbus, and WLW-T in Cincinnati, for example. I think it's safe to assume all three are owned by the same company, which in fact was the case. They were owned by the Crosley Broadcasting Company, the same Crosley that made the radios, and the same Crosley after whom Cincinnati's Crosley Field was named. In fact, two of the three still have the same call letters, except for having dropped the hyphen. The only one to change is WLWC, which is now known as WCMH, although WLWD is now Channel 20 instead of Channel 2.

If you haven't figured out by now that we're in Southern Ohio, we are. So let's get started.

  1. Looking at the WLW family of stations - a true regional network - I note the recurrence of the name Walter Phillips.

It would be a few years later that he moved to WGN Radio-TV in Chicago, where he became Wally Phillips, king of morning radio.

Wally made a few tries at TV, but radio was his home; he liked to say that he had a "radio face" (actually he was just prematurely bald), but that didn't affect his ability to talk one-on-one with callers on any subject that came up, serious or comic.
Wally was WGN's morning drive man for thirty-some years; when he retired from WGN, the city of Chicago made a celebration of it, with a full-on tribute at the Museum of Broadcasting, attended by every important local figure - including many radio guys whom he'd outlasted in direct competition.
Wally resurfaced later on, on weekends at another station, but Alzheimer's had taken root, and he had to retire for real; he died not long thereafter.

Wally Phillips was such a Chicago institution that even now, many locals know little or nothing about his Cincinnati beginnings.
Well, at any rate, now you know.

  2. A couple of typos.

Cincinnati's Channel 9 was/is WCPO, not WCOP. WCOP was the call sign of a Boston radio station.

And Columbus's Chanel 10 is WBNS, not WBSN.

But a great look back at southern Ohio TV way back when.

    1. Damn. With so many WLWs to choose from, you'd think I could have gotten the rest of them right. Both fixed - thanks!

  3. By the way...I would assume that the DuM refers to the DuMont Television Network, which would disappear for good a couple of weeks later.

    1. That is correct! I don't get a chance to use that one very often.

  4. Did the Crosley stations actually put their legal ID slide on the air as "WLW-X Anytown"? Did the FCC just look the other way?

  5. The original WLWD is now WDTN. The WLWD in your article is a low power television station that acquired the calls long after they were abandoned by the original station.
