What's on TV? Monday, November 1, 1965

Happy Halloween, everyone! We haven't done a Monday for awhile, so why not now? We're in Ohio, one of at least two states that can lay claim to being the Birthplace of Presidents (Virginia being the other), so it's an appropriate place to be one week before the end of the campaign that wouldn't end. There are more stations in this issue than you can shake a stick at (though why you'd want to do that is a mystery to me), so we'll concentrate on Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton. And away we go.

Allan Sherman, whom we listened to last week, is all over the place today, appearing both on Today and Tonight to plug his autobiography, A Gift of Laughter. (He was also a guest on last night's Sullivan show, and for all I know there might be more.) Sadly, his career was now on the downside, which is truly unfortunate. He was a very funny man.

Ben Casey features a rare dramatic performance by Dick Clark, as a dedicated young doctor who returns from Africa with a mysterious ailment nobody seems able to diagnose. The episode has one of the more pretentious titles from an era in which pretentious titles were the norm: "Then I, and You, and All of Us Fell Down."

  1. That Hullabaloo guest star was Dick Kallman, who was starring on NBC's short-lived sitcom Hank that season.
Kallman was a Broadway second-stringer - he was the guy who took over the star part when the star left to do the movie. He also did many road tours with Broadway hits; he developed kind of a following here in Chicago doing this.
Hank was supposed to make Dick Kallman into the Next Big Thing ... except that it didn't, and he went back to being a stage stand-by for the rest of his life.

For a bit more than a decade ('70s-early '80s, I think), Duane Dow was the #2 sports guy at the ABC station in Chicago, Channel 7. His particular beat was high school sports: for years "Duane Dow's Prep Top Ten" was a regular feature on the Saturday evening EyeWitness News.

When Nightlife ended on ABC in '65, the network didn't replace it immediately; Joey Bishop didn't start his show until January of '67.
ABC's owned stations (like Channel 7 here in Chicago) trotted out movies as the replacement; the net had spent a bundle on some major titles (and quite a few minor ones), and they all got a workout during this time.
I'll guess that the Ohio stations did the same.

The three WLWs were an ad hoc network owned by the Crosley family, which became the basis for what eventually became Avco Broadcasting.
The stations were (mostly) NBC affiliates, but they often bypassed network offerings in favor of local favorites, such as Paul Dixon and Ruth Lyons, mentioned above.
A few years after this, the Dayton station launched a talk show of its own, which the other stations picked up and began syndicating, leading up to the Avco takeover. The host of that show did pretty well for himself - Phil Donahue.

... and on and on and on ...

  2. You triggered something that I hadn't thought of in 60 years: "It's The Funny Company / And it's just for fun, you see / And kids from ev'ry neighborhood belong..." (something something something) "So come to order, come to order, says our president / 'Cause when the Funny Company comes / You'll get what we present: / Things To Do! Things To See! Stories! Songs! Toys! / All kinds of things of interest / And fun for girls and boys!" I am so pathetic that I remember most of this song by heart - although, to be honest, I can't remember what happened on the actual show! And it was only FIVE MINUTES LONG? Now the damn thing will be stuck in my head for a week.

  3. Didn't said if "Susan Slept Here" is in color (Although it's was filmed in Techincolor, as seen in the recently-released Warner Archive DVD). It's would've been nice to see the RKO tower logo in pink!!!

  4. The Dayton TV stations were all over the map as far as network affiliation.

I think that a few years later, WLWD (later WDTN) went fulltime NBC; WHIO went fulltime CBS, and WKEF went fulltime ABC.

There was a time when WDTN was ABC and WKEF was NBC, but I believe WDTN is again with NBC and ABC may still be with whatever WKEF is now known as.

    1. WKTR Channel 16 in Kettering, a Dayton suburb, the area's first commercial UHF station, had a brief affiliation with ABC, bringing the full schedule to Daytonians for the first time ever. WLWD (the 1949-76 forerunner of the modern day WDTN) was a secondary ABC affiliate for many years. Even CBS affiliate WHIO has cherry- picked some ABC programming from time to time.

      Delete
    2. WKTR Channel 16 became a full ABC station in 1970 (or possibly late '69), and remained so until the fall of 1970. Rumor has it that the fabled WKTR lost its affiliation over bribery. WKEF Channel 22 then regained its primary ABC affiliation (they also cleared programming from CBS and NBC until early 1970) soon after, but did not carry "General Hospital" or One Life to Live" for many years, except for a brief period in 1973 when Dayton 22(as they were branded on-air then) carried "OLTL" on a day- behind tape delay at 11:00 a.m. which lasted until September of that year, and in 1974, when WKEF carried ,"General Hospital" in pattern at 3:00 pm from September (l suspect it might have have started in the summer of '74, correct me if I'm wrong) until January 1975. WCPO Channel 9 (as a CBS affiliate) did not clear "Love of Life" for much of its September 24, 1951-January 1, 1980 run, except for two rare occasions: from May to September 1967, and once again from September 1969 until January 1971. Cincinnatians would be able to watch the long running CBS soap once again four years later on then-independent station WXIX Channel 19 from March until September 1975, along with "The Young and the Restless (which Channel 9 also did not clear before 1979 when the station put it on at 10a.m. on a day-behind tape-delay, lasting until 1981. They would not carry Y&R again until the fall of 1982, when WCPO shortened its hour-long " Noon Report" to thirty minutes, changing the title of its news brand to "9 News watch")

      Delete
    3. As for WHIO Channel 7, their CBS daytime preemptions were "The Edge of Night" until 1972, and "The Secret Storm" until 1970 (WKEF Channel 22 would clear both during the late 60's) They also preempted "The Joker's Wild" during its entire CBS daytime run,as well as "Match Game '73, '74 and part of '75.

      Delete
    4. WLWD (later WDTN) Channel 2, blew off "Concentration", " Personality", Sale of the Century", "Baffle", " The Wizard of Odds", the Art Fleming version of "Jeopardy!"," Eye Guess", "The Who, What, or Where Game"," Snap Judgement"with Ed McMahon and "Watch Your Child, the Me Too show", to name a few, from NBC, in favor of Cincinnati-based live-local programming from the likes of such iconic figures as Ruth Lyons, Paul Dixon, Vivienne Del Chiesa, Nick Clooney (during his brief stint at WLWC Channel 4 in Columbus, and Cleveland native Phil Donahue at Dayton,s WLWD.

WTVN Channel 6( also known as "Columbus 6 then) has also cleared NBC daytime shows in lieu of WLWC.
