What's on TV? Thursday, July 4, 1996

And a Happy 4th of July to you too, albeit a day early. I believe I neglected to mention on Saturday that this week's edition is from the Los Angeles area; no wonder, since I never got around to even touching on the week's programming. Never mind - we'll make up for it here.

For all my complaints regarding television in this era, it might surprise you to know that I think the pioneers of television would be pleased with much that you see here. Maybe not the tawdry "discussion" shows that dominate daytime television, or the common-denominator programs that run in prime time. But if you look at Channel 18, for example, or Channel 40, you'll see what I mean: programs that directly address a small, niche audience that would ordinarily be ignored by network television. In the case of Channel 18, you've got a veritable United Nations of language spoken on their airwaves. Channel 22 is another, with a prime time of Spanish-language programming. Both of these stations are doing exactly what the FCC hoped to accomplish through their emphasis on local programming - they're addressing a need on the part of the public, one that can't possibly be addressed by a network on the other side of the country. And Channel 40, the TBN affiliate, just like Bravo and A&E and other specialty stations, concentrates on programming to fit a very specific demand - religion in this instance, but it could be arts or sports or current affairs or news. This, rather than endless reruns of network shows from the last ten years, is what television's potential was supposed to represent.

Of course, it also produced a fragmented viewing public, but that's a complaint for another day.

  1. I thought that in 1996, the Boston Pops' July 4th concert was televised nationally on A&E (and locally in Boston on WCVB, Channel 5).

I would think that the fireworks on KTLA were a local Los Angeles-area display, likely televised live at 9 P.M. local with a repeat at 11:30 P.M.....or did KTLA show another July 4th fireworks show (maybe from another California city) on tape at 11:30 P.M.?

The "Capitol Fourth" concert on KCET was broadcast on a three-hour tape delay. I wonder if any PBS member stations on the West Coast will shot this year's concert tomorrow (July 4th, 2017) live at 5 P.M. PDT.

I'm pretty sure that Macy's had already begun their July 4th fireworks show in New York well before 1996, but I think that in 1996, it was broadcast only locally on WNBC-TV New York.

  2. I used to live on Long Island in the late 1980 and into the 1990's, and I recall that before NBC covered the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, WPIX did. In fact I remember that near the end of WPIX's involvement, that they would pretape messages from famous celebrities and sports stars that would air along side the fireworks. In 1998, Derek Jeter was show alongside the fireworks, (note that was the last year WPIX carried the NY Yankees until 2015)and Mike Piazza of the NY Mets in 1999, the first year WPIX carries Mets games, which they still do today.

In researching this topic further. It turned out that WPIX carried the Macy's Fireworks from 1977 to 1999, save for 1986. In 1986, it appears that the Macy's fireworks were preempted for a larger fireworks spectacle as part of the "Liberty Weekend" special that aired on ABC.

  3. That was the last year of Rush Limbaugh's TV show. While it opened to good ratings (and choice network affiliates) by '96 it was shuffled off to less-desirable stations (like UPN affiliates) and time slots.
Rush himself had pulled the plug due to this, that listing was probably a rerun.
7 hours of Brady Bunch??? Wow, just wow. Many areas have had at least one 'all-religious' and 'all-Spanish' stations since the early '90s - heck, Central Florida has two of each.
