What's on TV? Wednesday, August 7, 1963

This week it's a return trip to St. Louis; the last time we had a TV Guide from this area was last year, but back then the issue was from 1977. Only five stations to choose from, as was the case with so many metropolitan areas in the early '60s, and the educational station doesn't sign on until after dinner. Let's see what we have to choose from.

Have I mentioned this before? American Newsstand, hosted by Bill Lord, was ABC's attempt to introduce a newscast that would appeal to a younger audience, a la American Bandstand. Perhaps it would have had more success if it had been anchored by Dick Clark - you know, I don't doubt he could have pulled it off.

Here's something you don't see anymore, except on cable: 90 minutes of wrestling in prime-time. According to the listings, it looks to have been a rerun from earlier in the week. TV

1 comment:

  1. Let's see if you check out the listings really closely:

    - On Naked City, Sandy Dennis is playing a girl who's carrying a highly contagious disease, who's gotten loose from her hospital and is wandering Manhattan.
You might want to check out the cast list (especially who's playing her compassionate doctor).

    - Meanwhile, on The Beverly Hillbillies, Jed strikes up an "acquaintance" with a French sophisticate, played by an Estonian actress named Narda Onyx.
A couple of years later, Ms. Onyx scored her biggest Hollywood credit - half the title role in Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter (no prizes for guessing which half).

    - NBC's Mystery Theater is Universal TV's "repurposing" of various hour-long dramas from various of their anthologies of the last few seasons.
This week's show, "The Boy Who Wasn't Wanted", with Dana Andrews and Billy Mumy, first aired about a year ago - on Alcoa Premiere on ABC. (Universal TV had the reputation even then of never letting any film go to waste.)

    - Still on anthologies:
You may have noticed that ABC is running Jane Wyman's half-hour from a few years back in daytime; today's show is a thriller with Vincent Price.
Go back a few pages, though, and you'll find that ABC is using the Wyman show as a summer fill-in on Sunday nights, in between The Jetsons and the Sunday movie Just for fun, check out this Sunday's episode - and who the star is (and yes, this is a quiz).

    - Local Chicago note:
This season, Channel 5, the NBC station, was leading into its nightly news block with nightly showings of MGM's old Pete Smith Specialities a grab bag of one-reelers that hadn't been seen anywhere in years.
I was twelve years old then, my brother was a year older, and we both loved these - demographics be darned.
Strange But True: As I'm typing this, Decades is showing a Laugh-In rerun in which Richard Crenna is introducing some of the blackouts in a letter-perfect imitation of Pete Smith.
(Funny how things work out ...)

    - Personal brag:
The very last listing here is for KPLR's 10:50 movie, Alias The Champ.
It was this epic, from Republic Pictures in 1949, that brought about my first - and last - outing as an Internet Film Critic-Analyst.
Several years ago, on Steve Lewis's Mystery*File blog, the subject of professional wrestling came up. Not long before, I had acquired a c2c DVD of this timeless classic, which I'd first seen on TV when but a lad.
Alias The Champ is best-known(?) as the only feature film appearance of Gorgeous George, who was pro-wrestling's first breakout TV star.
I did a sort-of critique of this as a comment to a different post. Someone suggested that Steve Lewis upgrade it to a full-fledged blog post, which he did; it's been there to this day.
I don't remember the exact date; just go to Mystery*File and type Alias The Champ into the search box, and there you go.
