Maybe I'm just bored and wanted to try something new, perhaps I'll do this again from time to time, or possibly I'll start doing this every week - not sure, but it was fun to do something different, and I enjoyed being able to include a little more about the program than I usually do. These listings are from the Twin Cities, as opposed to the Minnesota State Edition, so have at it!

Love the re-format :)
ReplyDeleteis "DAVE GARROWAY" actually the Today show?
Yes. John Chancellor took over hosting of TODAY within months of this listing.
DeleteAny idea why they didn't just list the show as "Today", rather than just the host's name?
DeleteMy best guess on why they listed the show under Garroway's name comes from their habit of abbreviating the titles of certain shows; e.g. "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" was abbreviated as, I think, "Daisies" I think that at various points the Tonight Show was listed as "Jack Paar" and "Johnny Carson" rather than the show's name (although I think NBC did incorporate Paar's name into the show's title), and I think somewhere I saw a reference to the "Dave Garroway Today Show."
DeleteThe most likely answer is that it was so personality-driven, they figured most people simply thought of it as the Dave Garroway Show.
I like it, Mitchell. Love the "Color" block.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John!
DeleteWas Frank Beutel related to Bill Buetel, who anchored the local news at WABC-TV New York for many years?
ReplyDeleteNot that I'm aware of, although I'd never say that for certain. I never heard any discussion of it here, and as I recall Frank didn't look anything like Bill, but stranger links have been made.
DeleteMitchell, this is my first time posting, but I been a fan of this website for a few years. Nice job on the lineup, the only thing that is missing are the TV Guide channel bullets. However, you would probably have a graphic designer to achieve using that element, so it not really a big deal. There is one question though, I was wondering, how do you created the "COLOR" boxes for the lineups?
ReplyDeleteAgain, I must say you have a nice website. :)
Thanks for the kind words, Sean. I'm not sure I can explain how I did the COLOR boxes - it was kind of an accident. A very small font in Word, combined with highlighting it and doing a frame around it - but I'm not sure I could do it again. Tough enough duplicating it for "DEBUT" and "RETURN"!
DeleteThis was really a slow day ...
ReplyDeleteI believe I may have mentioned this before, but it probably bears repeating:
A year or so after this issue, Channel 11's news anchor, Chick McCuen, came to Chicago to join Channel 5, the NBC station, as #2 anchor to Floyd Kalber.
Because it was Chicago, and because it was a network station, he upgraded to Charles McCuen. (His co-workers often addressed him as "Chick")
The order was: McCuen at 5 and 6 pm (local news was starting to expand in the early '60s), Kalber at 10 pm.
McCuen stayed at ch5 until 1971, at which time he left broadcasting and went to Springfield to work for the Illinois State department of Education; he passed on in 1995.
Just so you know ...
And now we know the rest of the story! Thanks, Mike!
DeleteMitchell - I love the layout & it's much easier to read than the most recent TV Guide daily listings template you recently introduced. The descriptions & "COLOR" "DEBUT" blocks are a great addition to my favourite feature on your highly entertaining blog/website
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike! Wait until you see what I'm trying to do with the early 70s editions! By the way, what's up with the B.C. Lions?
