What's on TV: Monday, November 2, 1970

We're back in New York this week, but I thought I'd change things up a bit, so I've included the listings for WTIC in Hartford and WATR in New Haven. Not a big change, but it does give us a little more variety. So see if you can find any of your favorites!

This was the version of Beat the Clock that I knew, that I grew up with; I'd never seen the original one with Bud Collyer until a few years ago. After seeing it, the celebrity guest (so popular in the '60s and '70s) just doesn't seem to fit.

  1. Mitchell,
Sorry to correct you, but Channel 8 call letter's in 1970 were not WATR. Channel 8 call letters at the time was WNHC-TV. Channel 8's owner's, Triangle, also published this very magazine that we a come to love. :) However, there were forced to sell (due to media concentration and a complaint by then Pennsylvania Gov. Milton Shapp over a smear campaign against him) to CapCities. CapCities would own channel 8 until the bought the ABC network and its stations in 1985, however they were allowed to keep sister station WPVI in Philadelphia. WTNH has been under a few owner changes since then and it look like Nexstar is it's new owner.

As for WATR, that station has an interesting history. During it's early days (owned by WATR AM in Waterbury CT) it was an ABC station. By 1970, it had changed affiliation to NBC. In 1970, only WATR's network shows were listed. The reason that Channel 20 is listed instead of Hartford's Channel 30 (then WHNB) had a weak signal that could not reach Eastern Connecticut, hence WATR affiliated with NBC and its inclusion in this TV Guide Edition as it was also view-able on Long Island. By the late 70's, WATR's full listings shown(it's local programming was nothing to write home about) By 1979, Channel 30 in Hartford, had strengthened its signal to the point that covered most of Connecticut to the point that it was included in the NY Metro edition. With writing on the wall for WATR's NBC affiliation, they would lose the affiliation in 1982. New ownership decided to make it into a independent, and actually a decent one. It then in the 90's became a UPN affiliate, and later a WB affitiate before becoming a CW station. WCCT, as it is known now is owned by Tribune (also WPIX owner), but if the government approves the sale, will be owned by Sinclair.

    Phew!! :)

  2. "The Last Hurrah" was a fave on election day, not suprisingly; when it ran on Election Day 1972 it actually finished No.1 in the New York market for its timeslot. (Then again, considering the outcome of the election, it was way more interesting than the real thing.)

  3. Just curious here ...

Looking back on my back-in-the-day comment on The Last Hurrah:

Did you ever check out who played the handsome young Monsignor?

This would include actually seeing the movie.
You'd be surprised how many people in our age group don't place him at first ...

I am expecting an answer here ...

    1. Congratulations, John Rowe!

Your correct ID of "Monsignor" Ken Curtis from The Last Hurrah was the first right answer! (OK, the only one, but still ...)

      Now, The Bonus Round!:
How did Ken Curtis get the part?
      (Movie Buffs will know ...)

    1. I've notice that fellow CBS afilliate WTIC(now WFSB) did not carry "The Secret Storm" during this period. The former CBS station in my market, WJW (until 1994 when they defected to Fox),did not carry the then sixteen-old daytime sudser either. They also preempted "The Edge of Night". Wonder how the housewives felt about that.

      Delete
    2. WJW, however did clear "The Edge of Night", albeit on tape--delay at 10 a.m., instead of at 3:30 p.m. in pattern like WCBS Channel 2.

      Delete
    3. WTIC Channel 3 also passed on "Where the Heart Is", just like WJW.

  7. Pretty good history for WATR-TV, but Sean left two very important things out. First, WATR began on channel 53 in September 1953. It was a dual affiliation of ABC and Dumont, sharing time with the aforementioned WNHC. When DuMont shut its' operations down in August of '56, it became ABC alone. Second, WATR would switch to the stronger channel 20 in 1962, and switched nets to NBC in August '66. The Channel 53 allocation now belongs to Conneticut Public Television's WEDN in Norwich, which I have also seen listed in the NY Metro edition. WATR's full listings can also be found in another TV Guide edition, West New England.

  8. Forgot to mention the fact that WNHC-TV was on channel 6 at the time WATR first hit the air.

  9. 'The Movie Game' used to be able to get celebrity guests you wouldn't see on other game shows. I remember seeing Jack Lemmon on there, for example. Maybe the celebs liked the opportunity to show off their movie knowledge.

  10. Bill Beutel was first paired with Roger Grimsby on "Eyewitness News" on WABC on Sept. 28, 1970. He replaced Tom Dunn who at this point was reduced to doing the 7:30 A.M. newscast; by year's end, dogged by an ethics scandal dating to his days in Tampa, FL, Dunn would be let go by the station (he would join WOR-TV in the next year and remain there through 1987) and replaced on that morning newscast by Robert (Bob) Miller. Except for a few months when Beutel was co-hosting the ill-fated "AM America" in 1975 (or a period in 1971 when Beutel's co-anchor was Peter Jennings - yes, THAT Peter Jennings), the pairing would span until Grimsby's ignominious firing from Channel 7 on April 16, 1986.

"AM New York," meanwhile, is basically an indirect predecessor to what is today "Live With Kelly and Ryan." It premiered on May 18, 1970, some 4½ months before Kelly Ripa was born.

By this time WABC had ditched the "Best of Broadway" umbrella as used for the movies that aired after Dick Cavett. Weeknights at that point was "The 1 O'Clock Movie." Gloria DeHaven was in her last few months as "Prize Movie" hostess in the mornings; she would fall victim to industry retrenchments in the wake of loss of revenue that resulted from the ban on cigarette advertising.

"Felix the Cat" as on WPIX was syndicated by Trans-Lux. For years after 1960, there was a "Six Degrees of Felix" situation over on Times Square, as Trans-Lux made several "zippers" known as Adcasts that ran up and down the Square over the years (at the time, in use for Coca-Cola on 47th Street; another, running atop the Bond Clothes building, had its controls by that point from a rival entity, Naxon Telesign); while the EPOK display on 46th and Broadway which at the time advertised Bulova Accutron watches had cartoon loops drawn by Otto Messmer who'd animated the silent Felix cartoons in the 1920's, and for years also drew the Felix comic strip.
