What's on TV? Wednesday, March 16, 1960

We're back in the Twin Cities this week, and if you read the Saturday piece, you'll know that one of the highlights of tonight's schedule is Bing Crosby's appearance with Perry Como on Perry's Kraft Music Hall. You'll find that tonight, along with a key heavyweight bout on ABC featuring Zora Folley, the last man to fight Muhammad Ali before the latter's time-out for refusing draft induction.

There's a lot more to choose from, though - let's get out there and see what's on.

  1. The "Linkletter" hosting "On The Go" was Art's son Jack, who had a lengthy career as a TV personality in the 1960's and 1970's.

Perhaps Jack Linkletter's best-known show was "Hootenanny", a weekly folk-music show on ABC that premiered as a summer replacement in 1963, got good enough ratings to be continued for the 1963-64 TV season, but got cancelled in the spring of 1964.

The show's ratings in late 1963 were still strong, but "Hootenanny"'s audience plunged after the "British Music Invasion" hit in early 1964.

Seems that by March of 1964, more people wanted to hear the Beatles than the Kingston Trio.

      IMAGINE THAT!

    2. The ratings were more affected by the top folk artists boycotting the show, because the network demanded Pete Seeger sign a loyalty oath before being allowed to perform on it.

  2. Notes on some of the featured flicks: "A Royal Scandal (20th Fox) takes place in 18th century Russia, and stars Tallulah Bankhead, Charles Coburn and Anne Baxter. It's from a story by Ernst Lubitsch; "She's a Sweetheart" has no plot (seriously, no description of what the film's about), but has Jane Frazee, Larry Parks and two up and comers-Nina Foch and Ross Hunter; and Jinx Falkenburg and Bert Gordon are featured in "Laugh Your Blues Away", which is in fact a comedy. The latter two are from Columbia.

Some of you might well be wondering, "When did Charley Weaver have his own show?" Well, in addition to being Jack Paar's sidekick, CW (nee Cliff Arquette) hosted Charley Weaver's Hobby Lobby on ABC beginning in the fall of 1959. By this time, it was almost done (off the air).

It's hard to say which Four Just Men episode WCCO aired that week, tho I have a hunch it might have been "The Miracle of St. Phillipe" with Dan Dailey. It aired in the UK the previous week, so I figured this is what was shown Stateside.

If anyone can come up with more info on this "Captain Sunlite", I'd sure appreciate it. On a trival note, the title of WTCN's mid-morning movie was spoofed in a 1938 Three Stooges classic, "Violent Is the Word for Curly".
