Of course, a look at the page itself - as you see above - shows us that they simply ran out of room on the line, and knew people would understand what they meant. Had one of the four stations not been showing it, "Best" probably would have been included. TV Guide often did this with shows with long titles - I Dream of Jeannie, That Was the Week That Was, Please Don't Eat the Daisies. Weren't times easier back then, when we didn't need to jump to conclusions? These listings, by the way, are from the Minnesota State Edition.

“Let’s Go Steady”
(1945)
|
I read somewhere that FATHER KNOWS BEST as a radio show had Jim Anderson acting more like a typically bumbling dad and that the title either for radio or tv was supposed to end in a question mark (FATHER KNOWS BEST?). I'm glad Robert Young & his co-producer Eugene Rodney decided not to make Jim Anderson another bumbling dad. I only watched LIFE OF RILEY once or twice on CBS before I was permanently sick of it, and I changed the channel on BLONDIE (1950s version) as soon as Dagwood opened his mouth & spoke. I figured out back then (1980s) that I couldn't stand tv families w/ idiot dads whose families could barely respect them, no matter how classic the shows were.
ReplyDeleteThe other classic TV show whose title often got abbreviated in TV Guide was "Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea", which often got abbreviated in listings as "Voyage".
ReplyDeleteSince it would be more than two years before the first trans-Atlantic broadcast satellite (Telstar I) would be launched, and five years before the first geostationary trans-Atlantic broadcast satellite (Early Bird) would be launched, "The Today Show" from Rome was taped ahead of time (probably the day before) with tapes shipped across the Atlantic for broadcast, likely the next morning.
ReplyDelete"Today"'s longtime news reader, Frank Blair, likely didn't make the trip; I would think he was back in New York, doing live news updates every half-hour.
I believe that shortly after Early Bird was launched in 1965, "Today" did do a show live by satellite from London (at least to the East; the West saw it on a couple of hours' delay).
Working from the Chicago edition of this week's issue:
ReplyDeleteHere's how the listing appears in my copy (approximately):
2 13 22 FATHER KNOWS BEST
All on one line, as you can see.
But later that same evening, this listing appears:
7 13 28 ADVENTURES IN
PARADISE - Drama
Two lines.
As a control, I checked out the rest of the week.
On Friday night, I found this:
7 13 28 MAN FROM BLACK-
HAWK - Western
Two lines, with a hyphen yet.
And later on that night:
5 16 |color| MASQUERADE
PARTY - Panel
Back to Monday night, locally:
9 |color| BUGS BUNNY AND
FRIENDS - Kids
And later on:
9 HOW TO MARRY A MILLION-
AIRE - Comedy
My overall recollection of at least the Chicago edition of TV Guide is that when necessary, they went to two lines (exceptions rare).
Follow-up Control:
Skipping ahead to September of 1966:
5 16 39 PLEASE DON'T EAT
THE DAISIES - Comedy
On the other hand, from that same issue:
5 16 39 |color| MAKE A DEAL
All clear now?
Abbreviations I have seen: believe it or not, I've seen PDETD shortened to just "Daisies" and I Dream of Jeannie as "Jeannie". There were truncated titles of others sorts, like with daytime shows ("World Turns", "Tell the Truth") and some syndicated fare ("Nashville Music"). Why I'll bet there have been newspaper TV section listings like "Pop Goes Country" and Ed Sullivan's program pre-1955 as "Toast of Town" It's totally amazing how far we have come since those days.
ReplyDeleteA little background on some of the movie offerings:
"The Girl of the Limberlost" is a remake of two films, 1934's "Girl of the Limberlost" and 1939's "Romance of the Limberlost". Screenplay by Erna Lazerus. Based on the novel by Gene Stratton-Porter, it stars Ruth Nelson, Dorinda Clifton, Loren Tindall, Gloria Holden, Ernest Cossart and Vanessa Brown. The 1954 Hansel and Gretel would sure make George Pal proud-sorta. It's a "Puppetoon"-type production with the voice talents of Anna Russell, Mildred Dunnock, Frank Rogier and Delbert Anderson. RKO filmed it in Technicolor, but WTCN (now KARE) could only get a B&W print. It's on DVD from Amazon if you'd like to check it out. My Marriage sounds like a romantic drame, but it's a police crime flick with Claire Trevor and Kent Taylor. It's about an underworld gambling czar who masqueraded as a respectable member of high society. When he's killed, a cop friend helps his daughter Carol (Trevor) find his murderer. A taut, tense story taken from an original screenplay by Frances Hyland.
Here's a switch: KDAL, the CBS/ABC station in Duluth, showing Continental Classroom instead of WDSM, the NBC outlet. Kinda makes me wonder if they showed CBS' Sunrise/Summer Semester series?
