I had to look into "Midsummer Rock," shown on WNEW in prime-time. It turns out to have been highlights of the Cincinnati Pop Festival held earlier in the summer at Crosley Field, the soon-to-be-vacated home of the Cincinnati Reds. Over a dozen acts played, but the TV special showed only the five listed. Among the unseen: Bob Seger, who was not yet the star he would become, and Woodstock veterans Ten Years After.
ReplyDeleteAnd adding to the fun was that one of the hosts was Jack Lescoulie, formerly Dave Garroway's sidekick on "Today." Lescoulie had joined Avco Broadcasting in the late '60s as a host for live events and was at the Cincinnati Pop Festival for that reason. It's strange seeing this older gentleman from another time in entertainment hosting the broadcast and interviewing these youngsters involved in the rock era.
DeleteThe Goodell reference brought back this memory...January 1970 in Auburn, NY. Senator Goodell was the speaker at the Cayuga County Republican Party Dinner. At age 16, I was the president of the county teen age Republicans and being from a good Rockefeller Republican family was given a private audience with the senator before the dinner.
ReplyDeleteA positive and amiable man who smoked a pipe, he was nothing but gracious to a 16 year old. A few minutes into our discussion, the phone rang and the senator answered the phone. I could hear the one way conversation, knowing that he must be consoling one of his sons who were younger than I. I waited patiently. After a few minutes he gave his child good, old-fashioned consolation and encouragement and hung up.
"I apologize for the interruption, John," he said. That was my son back in Jamestown and he's very upset because his pet bird died. I needed to talk to him."
I was understanding and we continued on our conversation which was intelligent, thoughtful and inspiring to me.
His son who called? 11 year old Roger....and me a lifelong Patriot fan....
Boy, I love your stories! What memories!
DeleteThanks, Mitchell. Sometimes having the megamemory is a blessing ...and sometimes a curse!
DeleteThe "Batman" show on WCBS Channel 2 at 7:30 A.M. was actually the 1968 animated series produced by Filmation, which in the 1968-69 TV season had shared an hour-long slot with the Filmation-produced "Superman" cartoons (under the title "The Batman/Superman Hour"). I believe that all of the half-hour animated "Batman" shows aired by CBS on Sunday mornings in the 1969-70 TV Season were reruns of the 1968-69 season.
ReplyDeleteBack then, it was common for Saturday-morning cartoon shows to produce a grand total of seventeen episodes, which would be run six times over a period of two years. Some produced as few as thirteen episodes, which were either aired four times within a year, or eight times in two years
Do you have the NYC TV schedule for Labor Day September 1, 1970?
ReplyDeleteThis was in WOR's last days as "new york 9" (which dated back to February 1969); around September 1 or a bit later, the station would adopt the 'dotted 9' logo designed by Mike Shenon and Richard Luppi that they would use for the remainder of RKO General's ownership, even after the move of their city of license to Secaucus, NJ in 1983 (and of their physical facilities there in 1986). Through 1971, after the logo change, its slogan would be "Television 9." (Verified by an aircheck that year, as V/O'd by announcer Bob Jordan.)
ReplyDeleteSomeone noted on another Blogspot page that the Shenon/Luppi "dotted 9" logo first appeared in a print promo ad in the (New York) Daily News in its Aug. 23, 1970 issue.
DeleteGood info - thanks!
