What's on TV? Tuesday, August 8, 1967

We've got a lot to look at this week, an almost full slate of channels from the Minnesota State Edition. What's missing? KTCA, the St. Paul-Minneapolis public television station, is off for the week. Did it take the month off, or the summer? Not sure; I'd have to go back and dig into other issues to be sure, but the only other time I've seen this is during the Christmas school break.

Anyway, have a go with this, enough here that we've even got some tidbits for each station.

Channel 6 carried that news break live at 9:25 (cutting five minutes from Jack LaLanne!), which explains why Bozo starts at 3:55 rather than 4:00. Not that anybody cared.

You can see that most of the newly-produced daytime shows are now in color, with a handful of exceptions (most of which are on ABC). One of them is Dark Shadows, and I don't know about you, but I think that's a program that was much, much more effective in black-and-white.

Malibu U - now, there's a series I'd never heard of before. It aired on ABC as a seven-week summer series; this particular episode originally aired on July 28, the second of the seven episodes. As was Channel 7's wont, they fit it in where they could; considering the target audience, this after-school slot was probably a good one.

I ask you, who could possibly turn away from a program starring The Jolly Lumberjacks?

6 comments:

  1. In the absence of this issue from my own collection, I found myself noticing some odds and ends.

    - An Essay On Women was a short special from Harry Reasoner and his friend/writer/producer, Andrew A. Rooney.
Reasoner's CBS contract was coming around for renewal, and since Walter Cronkite wasn't going anywhere, Harry was listening to offers from elsewhere.
The jump to ABC came a couple of years after this; Andy Rooney decided to stay at CBS, and somebody there (probably Don Hewitt?) thought it might be interesting to put Andy on camera, doing his own stuff.
The rest is history - or at least it would be by 1970 …

  3. DARK SHADOWS broadcast its first episode at the end of this week. This episode was taped in color but broadcast in B&W on Friday, Aug. 11. This happened because ABC wanted to start color broadcasting the show on Monday, Aug 14. Oddly enough, if you watch these episodes today, and I gave my sister the DARK SHADOWS DVD set that includes these episodes, the 8/11 episode is in color, but the 8/14 episode is in B&W because the color tape for 8/14 was lost, so the 8/14 episode is in B&W on kinescope. The 8/11 episode has an announcer saying during the opening titles "Good news! This program, DARK SHADOWS, is now being presented in color.", though I mentioned before ABC broadcast it in B&W on 8/11. The first scene on 8/11 was set at the local bar, The Blue Whale, and it was a recap of the last scene of the previous B&W episode, so it most likely had to be taped twice, both in B&W and color.

  4. Oh Mr. Hadley, you forgot WKBT channel 8 in La Crosse, WI and WEAU channel 13 in Eau Claire-again. What did they show on this day? Anybody know? From your listings page shot, WKBT led into Cronkite with Bozo at 5 PM, and they probably had a western as their late movie as well.
