The Pan American Games have always been held the year preceding the Summer Olympics, and as the final big tuneup for the Games, they've always gotten a certain amount of publicity, although I don't think they're as big now as they used to be. I'm somewhat surprised that they'd be covered on public television, even if it's only the trials.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are appearing together on Today; since their last collaboration, The Fortune Cookie, came out in October 1966, I have to think they might be discussing their next movie, The Odd Couple, which came out in 1968; they're probably working on it now.

Although in 1967 we had yet to move to the World's Worst Town™, the afternoon schedule is very much like what I would see when I lived there: the time from 4:00 or so to 5:30 consists of ABC programming from earlier in the week, mostly cartoons. The Green Hornet and Batman (Friday afternoon) are two exceptions, although you could make the case for them being "live-action cartoons."

An Age of Kings is a terrific BBC production from 1960 that presents Shakespeare's eight historical plays (Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Henry V, Henry VI Parts 1, 2 and 3, and Richard III) in order. It's frequently seen on public television throughout the '60s, and it's available on DVD today.

The Borgia Stick is credited as the first made-for-TV movie, although it would probably be more accurate to say that it was the first made-for-TV movie to be aired on television, given that The Killers, with Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, and Ronald Reagan, was made for television but released to the theaters instead, being deemed too violent for TV.

Target Earth, with Richard Denning, Kathleen Crowley, Whit Bissell, and Virginia Grey, wasn't on MST3K, but it sounds like it should have. It looks like it should have, too.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK—Drama
|
This is the last show of the season for Red Skelton; starting next week, while he's on vacation, the variety show Spotlight takes over. It's an import from British TV; Benny Hill and Tom Jones were two of the hosts. TV
I first heard of Joe Pepitone when watching to Johnny Carson's monologue of Aug. 21, 1964. (According to the YouTube poster, it aired in LA on Aug. 24, but Carson mentions it being Friday night, which was Aug. 21 that year, so it may have been tape-delayed in LA.) This is currently the oldest color videotape clip of Carson's Tonight show, and he starts his joke about the Yankees around 2:30 here:

Brooks & Marsh stated in their book about primetime network tv shows that "See How They Run", a tv movie starring John Forsythe, was the first tv movie, originally airing Oct. 7, 1964 on NBC. You can read about it here:

We can thank IMDb, via Wikipedia, for that bit about The Borgia Stick.
DeleteHmmm … where to start?
ReplyDelete- Various of the New York Yankees made annual appearances on The Match Game (the old, clean version), courtesy of the team's premier fan, Gene Rayburn.
Since '67 was the year after the Yanks's last-place finish, this could be seen as a mercy booking.
- Since to the best of my knowledge Jack LaLanne never did a two-and-a-half hour show, I'm guessing that you (or somebody) left out the ABC late-morning schedule at KMSP.
If they took the ABC feed, the shows in order would have been Supermarket Sweep, Family Game, Everybody's Talking, and a Donna Reed rerun.
Or maybe KMSP was running a movie; check the other weekdays to be sure.
- The Borgia Stick was not the first made-for-TV movie; that distinction belongs to See How They Run, which NBC put up in 1964, amidst much hoopla; My family saw this one on its first airing, which I remember mainly for Leslie Nielsen getting killed off right at the beginning (he was still Serious at that time).
If memory serves, Borgia Stick was among the earliest ones to be announced, but sat on the shelf for a while, reasons unknown.
- Target Earth was from 1954, when Monogram Pictures officially changed into Allied Artists. According to the write-ups, the movie is set in Chicago; I'd kinda like to see what stock footage AA had of the old home town, but there's no hurry …
There are a number of sources that cite The Borgia Stick as the first, although, as you say, sources vary.
DeleteOff-topic:
ReplyDeleteI just sent Dan Budnic a heads-up about the next-in-order Bourbon Street Beat episode.
As I said to him, there's loadsa stuff in this one, but I would call your attention to an actress named Saundra Edwards, who has the major female guest role in this show.
If you've already watched this episode - or if you haven't, for that matter - you should look up Ms. Edwards's entry at IMDb.
As with Dan, no spoilers - just do it.
More later, if needed …
And what's up with Channel 11 preempting the Fugitive for Polka Varieties??? Must have been a full performance of the best of the Schmenge brothers to cause that to happen. At least KCMT stuck with reruns of the soon to end classic.
ReplyDeleteChmielewski Funtime - no offense to Florian Chmielewski, who was also a state legislator, but I swear that if, God forbid, I wind up in Hell, I'll be left with that show on a 24/7 loop. For eternity.
Delete...and beyond.
DeleteIt still amazes me that as late as 1967 there were still areas that did not have a dedicated network affiliate. That programs form one network were re-shown at other times o the channel available. I could see that in the 1950s, but by 1965 TV's dominance was well established.
ReplyDeleteLacey, in the case of KCMT, that's going to go on until the early 1980s. That station never does become a dedicated affiliate of NBC: it isn't until they become a CBS affiliate (they're bought out by the owners of WCCO) that they become a one-network affiliate.
DeleteTHE BORGIA STICK wasn't the first, but one of the earliest made-for-TV movies...I recommend it. It's the story of a couple (Don Murray and Inger Stevens) trying to escape their life in a modern day crime syndicate...Murray's character would launder mob money by acquiring legitimate businesses, while Stevens acted as his spouse, portraying suburbanites as a cover. It has a nightclub scene where George Benson performs--a decade before non-jazz audiences would know him from his album BREEZIN' and the award winning hit record "This Masquerade" Even radio buffs will like it, as it has a voiceover from long time New York City morning disc jockey Harry Harrison.

Lemmon and Matthau were indeed in the middle of filming The Odd Couple, In fact, the hilarious press box scene would be filmed that afternoon at Shea Stadium before the Pirates-Mets game where Felix's phone call causes Oscar to miss a game-ending triple play.

I wonder if Walter Lantz's appearance on "Art Linkletter's House Party" was to plug either a full-length animated movie he produced or an upcoming TV cartoon series that he likewise produced?
