Very Off-Topic, but I gotta get it in:
ReplyDeleteLate last night (actually very early morning, but you get the idea), I happened upon Episode 82 of the Eventually Supertrain podcast, appearing before the actual blog post at the site.
Earlier, I wondered aloud about how far in advance you and Dan recorded the Bourbon Street Beat segments; obviously you're working way in advance of the posting, which is why I'm a bit nettled here.
I would call your attention to a comment I sent you on this past January 12, 2020,
wherein I called your attention to the earlier incarnation of BSB's "Suitable for Framing" from 1960, as a 77 Sunset Strip segment from 1958, "The Well-Selected Frame".
"Incarnation" is putting it mildly - "Suitable" is more or less a direct lift from "Well-Selected", scene for scene; "W. Hermanos" at his (its?) grandest.
The provenance was easy enough to suss out: Charles Hoffman wrote the original 77SS script from Gerald Drayson Adams's story.
A few years on, when the WGAw strike hit, Hoffman was BSB's showrunner, charged with finding WB properties that could be "Hermanosed" for his show.
Using his own old 77 Sunset Script was an obvious move here; he could still take his old credit for a royalty, while giving "W. Hermanos" a screen mention (and cut-price payoff) for the "new" show (I suspect that in this case, Mr. 'Hermanos' was likely Hoffman himself, but we'll never know, will we?).
There was intrigue in those days …
To the point, however:
If you and Dan recorded the podcast before my January 12 comment reached you, I do think that simple common courtesy would hold that you let me know that my little effort didn't make your deadline.
I mean, really - almost a whole month?
Charles Hoffman lives on in a way on THE BRADY BUNCH. He was story editor for about 1 1/2 seasons, through Season 2, and his name was worked into an early Season 2 episode, "The Babysitters". In this episode, Greg & Marcia have been left in charge of the other Brady kids while Mike & Carol have gone out to a restaurant to be followed by a show. However, Cindy has come down w/ something, and that worries Mike & Carol. Mike & Carol both make excuses to phone home, and Mike's first excuse is telling Carol "Hey, there's Charlie Hoffman!". He walks across the restaurant to call home instead. Carol did the same a few minutes earlier w/o Mike's knowledge. The names of a few Brady background people were worked into scripts occasionally, so Mr. Hoffman's was included once as well.
DeleteThis is a long-standing practice, not only in movies, radio, and TV, but in prose as well.
DeleteIn the literary fields, it's called "Tuckerizing", after Wilson "Bob" Tucker, who called out his friends and fellow writers in his science-fiction stories.
In TV, Hal Horn can tell you many examples of how Paul Henning memorialized his friends and colleagues on his various shows, from Love That Bob! onward (one example to serve for many).
During Hoffman's Warner-TV period, he and his colleagues called each other out so many times … you could write a book (and I wish somebody would).
*Irrelevant anecdote (but I just thought of it and had to throw it in):
In one of 77 Sunset Strip's Hollywood shows, they were having a premiere soiree at Dino's, and the red-carpet announcer announced the arrival of "that bright new star Billy Anderson!"
I can't recall if "Billy" got on camera here, so if the real "Billy Anderson", who'd just officially changed his credit to Adam West … well, you can fill in the rest, right?*
Back to the point(?):
This has been going on for as long as there's been Hollywood.
So There Too.
Hello Mike.
DeleteSorry about not mentioning your comment. We recorded that back on October 1st.
This is the first time I've seen anyone referred to as "Guest killer" on COLUMBO. If I remember correctly Nimoy intended to "kill" Will Geer but "killed" Anne Francis instead. Capt. Kirk would join Mr. Spock on Murderers Row about 3 1/2 years later.
ReplyDeleteGreat linkage! Without going into full-fledged descriptions of each show, I thought it would be kind of fun to identify the killer, as well as the guest villains on Batman. You know, after almost 10 years, you have to find ways to keep yourself amused...
DeleteI suspect the home team of NBC's NHL game at 2 P.M. was he New York Rangers, as they had been Stanley Cup finalists the prior year, while Montreal had won the Stanley Cup in 1968, 1969, and 1971; and was still a solid contender (they'd regain the Cup later that spring and then win four straight titles from 1976 through 1979).
ReplyDeleteThe other New York team, the Long Island-based New York Islanders, were in their first season and were a couple of years away from being a good team.
You are correct - I completely forgot that the Islanders had come into the league that season. I live too much in the past.
DeleteThe call letters for Philadelphia's channel 29 should have been WTAF (WTAP is a TV station in Parkersburg, West Virginia).
ReplyDeleteAh, my eyes are failing me. Fixed.
DeleteThis was the PA-NJ edition of the TV Guide witch eventually merged with the the Philadelphia edition in the early 80's
