You wouldn't know it from looking at today's listings (from the Minnesota State Edition), but we're in the middle of an epidemic of multi-part episodes; Flipper and Gunsmoke are both conclusions of two-parters, and Get Smart is part two of three. I never liked multi-part stories; not because they're padded (although they frequently are), but because I didn't like having to wait until next week, often with a cliffhanger that we all knew wasn't really going to kill the star, to see how things end. I suppose I was impatient even when I was a kid. The nice thing about the digital age is that you don't have to wait until next week to find out how things end; the strange part of it, at least in my case, is that even though I can just advance to the next episode, I never do. Like it or not, I still believe in honoring the original TV conventions. I suppose that's just me being me.

MeTV recently reran that 2-part GUNSMOKE episode, "Nitro". It guest starred David Canary, who was about to take a regular role in the rival Western BONANZA.
ReplyDeleteI love those coincidences, whether it's seeing an episode you just read about, or an actor from one show appearing in another!
DeleteMitchell, was "Canadian Hockey" on KROC just focused on Montreal and Toronto? Or was it minor league Canadian hockey?
ReplyDeleteThis was the last spring of the Original Six as the league would double the number of teams by the start of the 1967-68 NHL season. Anyone remember the Oakland Golden Seals who wore white skates a la the Oakland A's? Both teams owned by the flamboyant Charlie Finley.
Not sure--I'm guessing it would have been the former rather than the latter. And yes, I remember the Seals--they wound up moving to Cleveland and Becoming the Barons, who then merged with the North Stars, before they would up splitting the teams again to create the San Jose Sharks. Of course, then the North Stars moved to Dallas and we wound up with the Wild. What a way to run a railroad, to coin a phrase.
DeleteThe hockey game noted was Game 5 of the Stanley Cup semi-finals between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks, from the Chicago Stadium. The Leafs won the game 4-2, taking a 3-2 series lead back to Toronto, where they would on Tuesday. They played the Montreal Canadiens for the Cup, winning the series 4-2. Weekend games of that series were broadcast by CBS.
DeleteIt would be interesting to see. Yes, the NHL doubled from six to twelve teams in 1967-68. Interestingly, California's Bay Area was seen as a prime market for the NHL thanks to the success of the minor league team, known as the San Francisco Seals and the larger population. Throughout its nine year existence, they were known as the California Seals, the Oakland Seals and the California Golden Seals. Charles Findlay's ownership of the team is their best known period, but they made only two playoff appearances. They weren't any more successful as the Cleveland Barons from 1976 to 1978 despite the Gund Brothers' ownership. When they merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978, they became the last major league North American sports team to fold. Interestingly, the Gunds were a lot more successful back the Bay Area with the San Jose Sharks.
DeleteDavid, I remember the Leafs run back in '67 well. Living close enough to the border in upstate NY, the antenna would be turned with a pipe wrench to get CKWS in Kingston, ON to catch the weeknight games. 51 years and counting for the Leafs...
Delete"Upbeat" on Channel 11 (2:00p) features a VERY young Bob Seger with his first band, The Last Heard! I wish there was surviving video footage of this! His music was pretty fierce in the 60s!
ReplyDeleteI really think it's a shame there are no more local-based music shows. There used to be on local community access programming, but the cable companies have pretty much destroyed local programming. (I know this- I work for a community access station in California!)
