What's on TV? Wednesday, November 29, 1961

One of the things I noticed in today's listings was a little note in the description of the U.S. Steel Hour story "Tangle of Truth." "Taped from a live broadcast," it says, and of course it's because of the time difference because we're out here in Oregon this week. No, what's interesting is that, here in late 1961, we still have weekly (or every other week, in the case of the U.S. Steel Hour) shows that are broadcast live. As I've mentioned before, live television is really a different animal from film or tape; by now, other than soap operas and news and sporting events, live broadcasts are pretty much limited to prestige drama anthologies and variety shows that try to capture the energy of live performances. They're not completely gone in 1961, but they're becoming fewer and farther between.

  1. To Whoever Finds This:
    Greetings!
By now, you should be aware that your website here has gone berserk, to the point of not accepting comments, making links, or providing access to any of the services normally available at this station.
(Fortunately I was able to find a backdoor - and as yet I'm still unsure as to whether this is going to work all the way - which makes this Another Story.)

As it happens, I have the Chicago edition of this issue (for once!), and so I can provide a bit of service for you here:
That Wednesday special about the murder case was a local Portland (via Seattle) program, which means we in the rest of the USA didn't get it.
I can tell you that the NBC network was running - in place of Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall - its own special, We The People - 1961, hosted by Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
According to the listing, this was a "... one-hour version (with a difference) of the old 'We, The People' show."
This show sent crews out to various parts of the country "... where citizens both ordinary and well-known (Paul Anka, Woody Herman, Gil Hodges) are seen live and on tape (Portions of this show are in black-and-white only)."

There's other stuff here, but until I find out whether this is going to get through, I think I'd better stand down.
Best of luck with whatever part of Indiana you're settling down in (and believe me, it makes a difference).

    Count three and pray ...

    1. Thanks, Mike! Thanks to you, I tinkered with some things and got it back working again. I might not noticed this for a few days. I'm interested to hear what else you've got!
