What's on TV: Thursday, December 22, 1955

We're in the home stretch tonight, and those programs that aren't Christmas specials have a holiday theme. Johnny Carson's variety show, for instance, features Johnny being granted three wishes by his fairy godfather "in keeping with the holiday season." Bob Cummings welcomes his grandfather (also played by Cummings), who's coming to pay his grandson a Christmas visit. And, as I mentioned on Saturday, Dragnet features the famed Christmas episode "The Big Little Jesus," in which Friday and Smith investigate the theft of the Child Jesus from a church manger scene. Go watch it if you've never seen it before. That and the rest of today's listings are from the Minneapolis-St. Paul edition.

  1. Off-topic, sort of, but it happened today, so here we go:

On this fine day (Monday, December 20, 2021), I took delivery of a book I'd ordered several months back, which becomes my Christmas present to myself:
Shooting Script And Other Mysteries, by William Link and Richard Levinson, newly published by Crippen & Landru of Cincinnati OH.
This is a collection of the earliest short stories by L&L, dating back to
the first one in 1953: "Whistle While You Work", as it appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in that year.
Also appearing here is the submission letter that Bill Link sent to Mercury Publications, introducing himself and his partner Dick Levinson.
Also also appearing, the acceptance letter/contract from EQMM, agreeing to pay "ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FIVE ($135.) DOLLARS" for all the various rights (with an additional stipend of "THIRTY-FIVE ($35) DOLLARS" for the first reprint rights, and some other stuff here and there ... all authorized by Lawrence E. Spivak, publisher, and Ellery Queen, Editor.

    ( ...Yes, that Lawrence E. Spivak ...)

Anyway, there's 17 stories here, dating from 1953 to 1966, while L&L were breaking into TV; entry-level stuff to be sure, but Bill and Dick clearly had the goods right from the start.

I should point out here that I bought the Special Limited Edition, cloth-bound, limited edition signed by Margery Nelson Link (Bill's widow) and Chris Levinson (Dick's surviving daughter); the whole thing set me back $51 (shipping included), but an icon is an icon, I guess ...
Crippen & Landru offers a less-expensive trade paperback, in case you're interested.

Just thought I'd let you know ...
