There isn't anything very Valentine-y about it, but I did hold out a couple of items from Saturday for use today. First, on Today has a very interesting pairing of guests: the young actress Lynn Redgrave, riding a high from Georgy Girl and now appearing on Broadway, and John T. Scopes. And if that name sounds kind of familiar, it should, as in the Monkey Trial. That's right: John T. Scopes was the schoolteacher who was hauled into court in Tennessee in 1925 for teaching the theory of evolution. His defense attorney was Clarence Darrow. Assisting the prosecution was William Jennings Bryan. And here Scopes is, the man at the center of it all, on television. Think about how remarkable that is.* Talk about history coming to life.
*Scopes also appeared on To Tell the Truth in 1960, as a tie-in for the movie release Inherit the Wind. He was probably on Today promoting his memoirs, which would come out later in 1967.
Later, on The Mike Douglas Show (4:00 p.m., WCCO), one of the guests is Joseph Pilates. And that name ought to sound familiar as well; he only created the exercise regime that bears his name. Who could have guessed?
A couple of other interesting items in this Minnesota State Edition: the Pillsbury Bake-Off, live from Los Angeles and hosted by Art Linkletter; and Hall of Kings, a documentary look at 900-year-old Westminster Abbey, hosted by James Mason. And who's one of the actresses also appearing on the show? Why, it's none other than Lynn Redgrave.

I wonder if KCMT was somehow worried about the morality of "Occasional Wife" or if the ratings were so bad that a rerun of "Twilight Zone" was a safer choice?
ReplyDeleteI've never thought of that possibility before. Not to say that KCMT used that as a reason why, but that's just the kind of thing they would have done.
DeleteIt turns out that I don't this one in stock, but the date and the header grab gave me a couple of clues:
ReplyDelete- Tonight's Invaders is "Vikor", which was one of Jack Lord's last guest shots before he moved to Hawaii for some reason.
In this one, Lord plays an embittered Korean War vet who hooks up with The Invaders in order to get the power to push people around the way he's always wanted to (starting with wife Diana Hyland); ultimately, Boss Invader Alfred Ryder turns on him, but that's the story ...
A few weeks after this, Jack Lord turns up on The Fugitive, playing a rotten husband who's planning to bump off his rich wife; when he finds out that Dr. Kimble is in his employ, the plan steps up ...
Looking back, it would seem that Jack Lord sensed that he was heading into full-time Villain mode, which likely was a factor in his taking on Hawaii Five-0, which became his annuity.
- Checking dates, it seems that tonight's Girl From UNCLE is "The Carpathian Caper Affair", with THRUSHites Ann Sothern and Jack Cassidy putting up a plot that comes to include a not-too-bright newlywed - played by Stan Freberg in one of his infrequent acting roles.
Around this time TV Guide did a picture feature about an elaborate stunt that Freberg was in with Stefanie Powers; I'll make the educated guess that this stunt was a possible reason that Stan didn't do more parts like this.
Speaking of Duluth. It was the answer on Fianl Jeopardy today (2/14/22). The Coastal contestants guessed badly to.....This 90,000 population city is the largest city on the largest Great Lake. Two contestants each guessed Green Bay (which is stupid because Chicago and Milwaukee both border Lake Michigan) and the third guessed Minneapolis which is !) one hell of a lot bigger than 90,000 and 2) not on a Great Lake. I didn't personally to great all day, but I knew the largest Great Lake was Lake Superior, and correctly guessed Duluth. The contestants which consisted of 2 West Coasters and 1 East Coaster showed once again their complete puzzlement of life in Midwestern states.
ReplyDeleteI watched the show w/ a friend and originally guessed Reno, which is near but not on Lake Tahoe, but when my friend mentioned Lake Michigan, I knew Lake Superior was bigger and guessed Duluth just before time ran out. This answer reminded me of an early WWTBAM player who was given another chance to play on the show because he'd guessed Lake Michigan instead of Lake Superior for a question, and since Lake Michigan was said to have greater volume (probably from being deeper), he was later credited w/ a correct answer and allowed to continue competing.
