I'm looking this week at the guest list for some of today's shows. Now, keep in mind I'm not as smart as casting directors and guest coordinators, and any one of you can probably cite an example in support of their decisions. Having said that, I'll note that Hope Lange is a curious choice on a show as bawdy as Match Game. Yes, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was a comedy, as was The New Dick Van Dyke Show; and she might have had as raunchy a sense of humor as anyone; nonetheless, which of these things is not like the others? Likewise, I don't think of Earl Holliman in the same category as, say, Charley Weaver when it comes to The Hollywood Squares, but then I never saw how Glenn Ford fit on there either. And on The Mike Douglas Show (KMOX), it seems as if Lionel Hampton deserves a better supporting cast; he ought to be on The Tonight Show with, say, Keely Smith singing with him. But again, what do I know? On the other hand, these are observations 45 years later, so we're entitled to be curious. Anyway, enjoy this St. Louis Edition.

TV
Back in The Day, when celebrity game shows were in fashion, Stars (and those who wanted to be stars) lined up to appear on them; they got on national TV, and got to be themselves, just like regular folks - smart, funny, and on the same level with the audience.
ReplyDeleteOn Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall, who'd had a considerable career on stage and in nightclubs before this, used many friendships he'd made in the business to recruit panelists for the show (Glenn Ford and Earl Holliman are just two examples out of many I could cite here).
The same applies here to Gene Rayburn, who made many friends in the business with his Goodson-Todman connection; Match Game (both old and new versions) and Tattletales drew their celebrity pools from old, long-standing friendships.
True story that I just happened to remember:
About the time she was doing Ghost And Mrs. Muir, Hope Lange was booked for a week's worth of Hollywood Squares.
At one point, a contestant called on her, and Peter Marshall asked this question:
" Lola Von Wagenen did something a number of years ago, that many American women have wanted to ever since. What was it?"
Hope Lange thought about it for a bit, then gave an answer to the effect that the lady in question had won a certain political office (or something on that order).
The contestant agreed with that answer, but that wasn't correct; Peter Marshall said:
"She married Robert Redford."
The audience laughed sympathetically - but Hope Lange let out a shriek:
"LOLA! My God - I KNOW her!"
And she did - she knew Lola Redford, the wife of a friend of hers; the "Von Wagenen" part threw her ...
That sort of thing used to be possible in that bygone time; nowadays, who knows?
Both Speed Racer and Spider-Man had half-hour length episodes---Not sure where any "friends" would fit in.
ReplyDeleteJohn Reardon, the guest on Over Easy, was known for his opera performances on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteMe, I want to know what Mr. Carlin was doing on "Captain Kangaroo."
