...Welcome once again to Don't Get Me Started!:

This was the ABC network slate for Friday night at that point (all times Central, because that's the time I'm familiar with; adjust for regions):

6:30: Operation: Entertainment (about to be dropped; Tom Jones in the wings).
7:30: Felony Squad (also circling the drain; the Generation Gap game show coming soon).
8:00: Don Rickles (Also as above; Let's Make A Deal about to jump from NBC).
8:30 Guns Of Will Sonnett (good for the season).
9:00: Judd For The Defense (likewise; both of these are bubble shows against CBS's movies).

From your listings, it would appear that ABC was DBing O:E and Rickles and bypassing Felony Squad in favor of a local movie package, which would normally run two hours.
If that's an ABC network sports special, then Will Sonnett is a standard preempt (by the way, Jack Benny's Charley's Aunt movie has an 81-minute run time, so Channel 6 is hacking the living daylights out of it).
So if there's an odd man out, it's Felony Squad, which is on the way out anyway.

#always*look*things*up#
Mike Doranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14427528138598549103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-77232063014475162852019-01-24T15:07:42.428-05:002019-01-24T15:07:42.428-05:00Evidently, this was the next-to-last show of Opera...Evidently, this was the next-to-last show of Operation: Entertainment. The last show aired on January 24, 1969. The Don Rickles Show would be cancelled on January 31. O:E would be replaced by This Is Tom Jones and Rickles was replaced by the nighttime Let's Make a Deal. I noticed that they would not air the ABC Sunday morning programs Issues And Answers and Discovery '69, timdub70https://www.blogger.com/profile/09891461198896930029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-64958248260225522122019-01-24T14:29:45.578-05:002019-01-24T14:29:45.578-05:00Well, let's take a look. At 6:30 we have the ABC Evening News with Frank Reynolds, at 7:00 it's What's My Line? (Joanna Barnes, Godfrey Cambridge, Arlene Francis, Soupy Sales), and at 7:30 it's a 90-minute movie, Charlie's Aunt (1941), with Jack Benny and Kay Francis. (Not noted as a special, BTW.) When we reach 9:00 p.m. it's an ABC sports special, "The French-American Challenge Cup" skiing from Aspen, Colorado. At 10:00, it's Judd For the Defense. Ergo, it appears as if Operation: Entertainment and Rickles are the odd men out.Mitchell Hadleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08695771505209080030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-78411876523928086352019-01-23T11:22:31.107-05:002019-01-23T11:22:31.107-05:00You can probably answer Zach's question by che...You can probably answer Zach's question by checking Channel 6's listing for Friday night, which is when those two shows normally aired on the rest of the ABC network.

If Operation: Entertainment and Don Rickles are on Friday, that means Channel 6 preempted them for a local special the previous Friday; the Sunday showings are what's called a "make-good", a common practice even today with network stations.
If, on the other hand, O:E and Rickles are not on Friday, then you're looking at a standard-issue delayed broadcast.
My best guess would be the former; here in Chicago, our network stations did this quite often when opportunities for a big local special presented themselves.
Since Mitchell says he's got two weeks of Philly in a row, it falls to him to answer this.
Mr. Hadley, over to you.Mike Doranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14427528138598549103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-22397399411131261892019-01-22T13:00:28.622-05:002019-01-22T13:00:28.622-05:00I wonder what's with the ABC affiliates late a...I wonder what's with the ABC affiliates late afternoon variety shows?
