It also shows just how much Laugh-In has infected television. From Artie Johnson (Laugh-In launched the careers of more short comics and more women comics than any other medium I can think of) to a "How does that grab you" joke, it's clear that being #1 makes everyone try harder...to be you.

Don Adams is a terrific host, and very quick (so quick, he laughs at the jokes on the cue cards before he delivers them). Barbara Eden is a great alto. Those Soviet gymnasts are the most spellbinding act I've ever seen on the show. Mitch Ayres still leads the best band on television. The Brothers Castro are the Mexican Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66; I'm surprised A&M didn't pick them up. And while I generally can't stand Janis Joplin, I must confess, I kind of enjoyed her set.

Just what *is* the target demographic for HP? I love the show and so does my 19 year old daughter.

Anyway, I love your work. Thanks for all you've done and are doing!galacticjourneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02350935794214027433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-63927810429225278642017-10-27T00:00:35.920-04:002017-10-27T00:00:35.920-04:00PIONEER SPIRIT was shown the following summer on N...PIONEER SPIRIT was shown the following summer on NBC...it was about a trio of modern suburban couples who decide to pull up stakes and settle in the wilds of Alaska.
(one of many things I discovered in the CHICAGO TRIBUNE archives, before it got swept up by Newspapers.com and became pay for play)Paul Ducanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-50212600027843501192016-10-26T09:20:44.722-04:002016-10-26T09:20:44.722-04:00Regarding "The Tall Target"; I'd ima...Regarding "The Tall Target"; I'd imagine the showing that year may have been rougher to take considering not only was the calendar nearing 5 years since the assassination of President Kennedy but just 5 months and a few days after his brother Bobby was assassinated while campaigning for President.Jacobnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-84753953847409983182013-11-16T20:26:14.227-05:002013-11-16T20:26:14.227-05:00IIRC, the national anthem at the 1968 Democratic N...IIRC, the national anthem at the 1968 Democratic National Convention was performed by Aretha Franklin. I don't think the ceremonies were as elaborate as they are today, so maybe they didn't. On the other hand, considering ABC's minuscule (by today's standards) coverage, they may have simply gone off the air at 9.Mitchell Hadleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08695771505209080030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-32575125679334941942013-11-05T15:48:23.696-05:002013-11-05T15:48:23.696-05:00Sorry for the delay, Mike. EST (8 Central), which in the Eastern and Central time zones would probably have pushed back the start of the ABC movie "Is Paris Burning?"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042603612494762084.post-36236452570529532842013-10-29T11:42:12.637-04:002013-10-29T11:42:12.637-04:00Did I mention at an earlier post about how the ...Did I mention at an earlier post about how the '68 election almost got thrown into the House of Representatives? I vaguely recall having done that here (I know I've done it at other sites).

One of the kicks I get out of old TV Guides is looking up the shows that were on that week.
Thursday, October 31, had a small doozy of an unintentional pairing.
At 7 pm (all times Central) on ABC, The Flying Nun had an episode about a wacko movie star who's doing location work at the convent and decides to become a nun - to the consternation of her fiancee and her producer. Hilarity ensues (it says here).
The movie star was played by Patricia Barry, a frequent TV guest star of this period.
How frequent? Immediately following, on NBC at 7:30, Patricia Barry turns up on Ironside (the original, of course - you know, the good one). In this show, she's the producer of a talk show hosted by an obnoxious gasbag with political ambitions, played by Milton Berle (who co-wrote the episode).
Stuff like this happened all the time back in these days; the fun of TV Guide was checking through the listings to see when and where it would.
But you already know that, I guess ...

This was also the week that Buffy Saint-Marie made her acting debut on The Virginian. This show drew notice because Miss Saint-Marie made her appearance on the condition that only American Indians (as they were still then known) would be used in the cast.
The story goes that Miss Saint-Marie showed up at Universal's casting department with a wish list of actors she wanted used, with Michael Ansara at the top.
Then some killjoy told her that Ansara was actually of Lebanese ancestry. Broke the lady's heart (and Ansara didn't get the part).

1968 was the year I graduated from high school. I was a while finding employment, so I saw a lot of daytime TV.
Dick Cavett still had his morning show on ABC. During the Olympic weeks, Cavett featured reports from his "Olympic correspondents" Bob and Ray, which was about all the Olympic coverage I cared to watch.

I feel I may be getting to my character limit about now; if I think of anything else I'll come back.Mike Dorannoreply@blogger.com
