KFJZ, channel 11 (KTVT since around 1960), was in Ft. Worth, not Waco, but the magazine may have misprinted Waco there.
ReplyDeleteWBAP radio (Ft. Worth) & WFAA radio (Dallas) had a similar affiliation-sharing agreement back around this time. I think whichever was on 570 had ABC affiliation and 820 had NBC affiliation, but the 2 stations would swap frequencies during the day.
It was always said that WBAP TV/Radio owner Amon G Carter (Who was “Mr. Fort Worth” and promoted FW continuously) couldn’t have cared less if Dallas could receive the signal from channel 5 and originally the station’s tower that was close to downtown Ft Worth did not cover Dallas well and hardly at all in the counties to the east. Because of that issue, NBC worked out a deal with WFAA Channel 8 to carry some NBC programs - which was important since Dallas was and is the much larger city. All of the Dallas stations had their transmitters at the highest point in the area at Cedar Hill in southwestern Dallas County (where they remain today). That continued until after Amon Carter’s death in 1955. By 1957, NBC began threatening to pull the affiliation from WBAP all together and started negotiating with Fort Worth independent Channel 11 (KFJZ at the time - KTVT today) to broadcast NBC to the entire market. This evidently pushed the Carter family to finally move Channel 5’s transmitter from Fort Worth to Dallas County with all the other stations! So that’s why the two stations shared NBC programming. The radio stations began sharing frequencies almost from the very beginning in the 1920’s. They did share the 570 & 820 frequencies and switched several times a day until WBAP paid several million dollars for the 50,000 watt 820 signal and WFAA took the 5,000 watt 570 signal permanently in 1970 and that arrangement finally ended.
