NEWS
|
I was a bit confused about how FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK could show up on 2 different stations in Philadelphia (6 & 17), so I pulled up this day's listings from the city's INQUIRER newspaper (then owned, like TVG, by Triangle Publications) from my newspapers.com subscription. According to that day's listings, 17 carried EYE GUESS (and JEOPARDY!), as 3 preempted these shows, and the soap HIDDEN FACES at 1:30 PM, to carry noon news and 90 mins of THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW (3 was the originating station for his show at the time). Either TVG or you had a typo here. FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK was a short-lived Heatter-Quigley game show, announced like most H-Q game shows by Kenny Williams, but this one hosted by Lloyd Thaxton. Mr. Williams announced just about every H-Q game show, and for a short period of time in 1976 he announced 4 H-Q game shows on all 3 major networks: HOLLYWOOD SQUARES & HIGH ROLLERS on NBC, GAMBIT on CBS, and HOT SEAT on ABC.
ReplyDeleteHIDDEN FACES was hidden from Philly viewers, as no indie station picked it up, although 17 did carry ABC's ONE LIFE TO LIVE outside its regular time period, since 6 carried ABC's DREAM HOUSE against it. I guess ABC didn't have a problem w/ 2 of its own shows competing against each other, as long as they both attracted audiences.
"The Blue Minority" is listed as a "Group W Special" in the INQUIRER, so it was probably produced by Group W's WBZ-TV out of Boston. 3 preempted NBC's THE OUTSIDER (carried on Lancaster's 8) to show this special.
It's very interesting, now that I dig into it. Turns out TV Guide omitted an entire programming line on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.; I had to go to the other days of the week to find out that, missing from the Wednesday listing completely, was Eye Guess, airing at 12:30 on both Channels 8 and 17. It's on every other day of the week, so apparently it was just left off. I've since fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out!
