OK, who was "Nudie" on Merv Griffin's show? Wiki listed a couple different fashion designers who, if I read right, may have been related.
ReplyDeleteThis could only be Nudie Cohn (originally Nuta Kotlyarenko from Kiev, Ukraine, in the USA from approximately 1913 -emigrated at age 11), who became the original Rhinestone Cowboy.
ReplyDeleteNudie's elaborately ornate suits were a sort of joke that turned into a tradition in Hollywood; when fancy cowboy outfits were needed for movies, shows, parades, and the like, Nudie's Rodeo Menswear was the place to go - and the man himself proudly wore his wares whenever the opportunity arose.
- Such as when old friends like Slim Pickens would bring him along to Merv Griffin's show ...
Nudie can be glimpsed in brief roles in movies, such as Albert Brooks's spoof "reality film", Real Life, in which his onscreen wardrobe was surprisingly sedate (Nudie also did a few walk-ons in Westerns along the way).
More Than You Wanted To Know will return ...
I actually was going to reply that myself, but Mike beat me to it. :) But in looking at the NY Daily news listings for that day, two other country or western themed guests were listed that day. They were Gene Autry and Pat Buttram, so I'm pretty sure that the "Nudie" mike was elaborating about is correct.
DeleteGram Parsons was another one of Nudie's regular clients.
DeleteWest coast time shift...Raiders vs Lions, THEN the Macy's parade on tape delay. The 1970 Raiders were on a roll when they hit this game. George Blanda had kicked and/or thrown for a win or a tie in the five Raiders games before that, including the infamous KC game where Ben Davidson does an after the whistle headstand on the back of a prone Len Dawson. One of the classic Raiders-Chiefs game ever. The Blanda miracle came to an end, however, on this Thanksgiving as a playoff-bound Lions team handled them easily.
ReplyDeleteFrom the always accurate (and true in this case) Wikipedia: Blanda's five-game "streak" began on October 25, 1970. In a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Blanda threw for two touchdowns in relief of an injured Daryle Lamonica. One week later, his 48-yard field goal (with three seconds remaining on the clock) salvaged a 17–17 tie with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. One week later, on November 8, Blanda would come off the bench against the Cleveland Browns. His late touchdown pass (with 1:34 remaining in the game) tied the game at 20–20. He would ultimately kick a 53-yard field goal, as time expired, to give the Raiders a stunning 23–20 victory. The following week, against the Denver Broncos, Blanda again replaced Lamonica in the fourth quarter. His touchdown pass to Fred Biletnikoff, with 2:28 left in the game, gave the Raiders an unlikely 24–19 win. The incredible streak concluded one week later against the San Diego Chargers. The Raiders managed to drive deep into Chargers territory in the game's final seconds. Blanda's last-minute 16-yard field goal would seal a dramatic 20–17 triumph.
Footnote to my last post. Blanda had been cut before the season but was recalled just before it started. He was 43 at the time he pulled off the miracle streak...shades of Tom Brady...
ReplyDeleteTo become the first American Conference Player of the Year...
DeletePaul
You kids enjoy the parade and the game. I'll be watching channel 3 at 6 pm to learn more details about getting close to real important things in life on the Beaver Huddle. We'll sit back and listen and just let them talk.
ReplyDeleteMatt Groening has stated that Krusty the Clown was inspired somewhat by Rusty Nails (KPTV).
ReplyDeleteCBS had several Thanksgiving parades they'd go back and forth between.
ReplyDeleteAt least parts of the Macy's parade aired live on the West Coast on CBS.
In the west, NBC's broadcast of the full Macy's parade was on tape, due to the early-afternoon (Eastern time) NFL game.
If NBC had the late NFL game, their Macy's parade broadcast may have been live in the morning with "The Today Show" being on a 5-hour delay at 9 A.M. Pacific.
