Today we have examples of two programs on commercial television that we're more accustomed to seeing on public broadcasting: Doctor Who and Monty Python's Flying Circus. Doctor Who's history in the United States began in the 1970s with the half-hour episodes appearing in syndication via Time-Life Television, and while it's always been identified with PBS, it would occasionally pop up on a commercial station, often in the late afternoon timeslot, as we see here on WTEV. Monty Python sightings on independent stations, in this case WKBG, are also unusual (if more common than Doctor Who), but at least it's being shown in a timeslot that its fans would recognize from PBS airings: 11:00 p.m. A couple of interesting rarities, courtesy of this week's Eastern New England issue.

As the opposite of what you pointed out regarding UK programs on commercial tv, you show BEWITCHED on PBS station WGBH-TV. I wonder how long that lasted.
ReplyDeleteWKBG (56) had already become WLVI in 1974.
ReplyDeleteI probably watched Airport '77 that night on NBC. Those Airport movies were among my favorites as a kid (even then I had a love of "cheese"). I was probably also pissed they cut out the swearing. There's just something about Jack Lemmon dropping the F-Bomb (probably why I love GlenGarry Glen Ross :) )
ReplyDelete"Doctor Who" and "Monty Python" showing up on a commercial station was not unheard of. But "Bewitched" on PBS??!!!
ReplyDeleteThe BEWITCHED on WGBH, the PBS monster, would be a computer (like my delightful Lenovo) throwing things around as one sets up one's lists...atop all else, the EVENING AT POPS episode would've run at least an hour, if not necessarily more. B repeats on WLVI or the other indies would make a lot of sense.
ReplyDeleteAlso, on the smaller CT PBS, that would be THE PALLISERS..."Pallisters" is a typo. Good work here generally...thanks for doing it!
ReplyDeleteA pity the guide/listings issue didn't give the schedule for Ch 11 in Durham, the southern NH PBS, which might've also opted for "alternate" programming to the main PBS feed on WGBH...WMUR, the Manchester NH ABC station that was also an often an "unfaithful" affiliate (some things are more common in the past than we might remember) might've joined the Boston ABC in pre-empting IN THE BEGINNING's pilot...or might've gleefully run it. And that DICK CAVETT...lifelong Ed Emswhiller fan.
ReplyDeleteI blame bleary eyes for thinking that IN THE BEGINNING was on ABC rather than CBS, and the Boston CBS station avoiding hassles with the local Diocese by running the pilot for IN THE BEGINNING...I vaguely remember that hassle from the time...and for managing to Not See the WMUR listings. But the NH PBS listings should also be there...
