What's on TV? Thursday, March 7, 1963
You'll recall that a couple of weeks ago in this space, I took issue with a CBS News article that referred to Carol Burnett as the first female host of a television variety show; readers, led by James McGrail, rushed to point out the many female hosts to precede Carol. I'm fairly confident we won't see a repeat this week with the claim that Dorothy Fuldheim was the first woman in the United States to anchor a television news broadcast as well to host her own television show. Dorothy Fuldheim was one of the grand dames of American journalism and a Cleveland institution: she was a fixture on WEWS (6;30 p.m.) from 1947 to 1984, and, before that, local and network radio from 1929; she also wrote for the Cleveland Press. She was outspoken and controversial and wasn't afraid to express her opinions; watch this video of her with left-wing activist Jerry Rubin. They don't make local journalists (or personalities) like her any more, do they? You can see her on WEWS at 6:30 p.m. tonight and every weeknight in this Cleveland edition.

We're back in Ohio this week, but another part of the state. Instead of Cincinnati, the focus in this issue is Cleveland, with its own set of quirks and local personalities. I quite enjoyed going through this issue; hopefully you'll find some of your favorites here.

What's on TV? Wednesday, December 25, 1957
It's Christmas Day, 1957, and there's plenty of festive programming to help make for a relaxing day. Many of the regularly scheduled serials are being shown; I'd suspect they might be filler episodes in which not much happens (other than cast members celebrating the holiday themselves), so that anyone missing their story today wouldn't find themselves behind on the storyline. Anyway, enjoy; this week's listings are from Cleveland, with Akron, Youngstown, and Erie thrown in as part of the deal.

Lots of movies today, many of them of the B-horror variety, and it's interesting to see how the Saturday movie staple has evolved over the years; in the '50s and early '60s, a lot of them are Westerns, but now they've evolved into sci-fi and horror. The Saturday morning fare brought back memories; I'd forgotten about the old Jerry Lewis cartoon, and I can't remember at all The Bugaloos and the Doubledeckers. Funny how the memory works, isn't it?
It's also the first Saturday of baseball season (by the way, did you see the Opening Week baseball tribute on the other blog? If not, take a moment and check it out), which means Channel 33 cuts American Bandstand back to a half hour. I don't know if I would have been so thrilled about that if I'd been a music fan instead of a sports fan. And a good prime-time lineup, from Mission: Impossible to Pearl Bailey to Mannix. All in all, an eminently watchable day of television.
This week's listings are from Cleveland, with Youngstown and Canton thrown in for good measure.

Although we've been in Ohio before (namely, Cincinnati), this is, I believe, the first time we've made a trip to the state's other two population centers: Cleveland and Columbus. I'm still not quite sure I chose the right day and stations to spotlight; there's some quirkiness that I'll point out in due course, but otherwise it's a pretty normal day. Not that normal isn't good. Not at all.
One final note: TV Guide is still indicating what shows are being broadcast in color, despite the fact almost all of them are. This will soon change, and they will simply identify the shows that are in B&W. For my own convenience, I've chosen to accelerate the schedule a bit, so I'm only indicating the B&W shows as well. But then I always ahead of my time.
