What's on TV? Thursday, September 8, 1960

As you know, when I'm writing up the Saturday TV Guide, I always like to leave something for today, and in this case, it's part one of the two-part Untouchables episode "The Unhired Assassin," the story of the mob's contract on Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, which overlaps with Joseph Zangara's determination to assassinate president-elect Franklin Roosevelt. The Roosevelt element, at the very least, is based on truth, but was Capone's gang really after Cermak? It's plausible. One thing that's beyond dispute is that today's listings come from the Nebraska State Edition, and contains a lot of familiar names.

I don't know much about the history of Nebrasa television, other thank that glorious moment in 1975 when it turned out that NBC had spent upwards of $1 million to design a new logo that was, except for the colors, an exact duplicate of the sylized "N" that Nebraska public television used. It was tremendously embarrassing, and it served NBC right; they should never have gotten rid of the snake logo in the first place. Anyway, this week's edition covers the Nebraska/South Dakota/Iowa area, America's heartland.

What's on TV? Wednesday, April 6, 1960

Happy day-after Easter to you all! This week we're looking at the Nebraska edition, which includes a healthy helping of stations from Iowa and South Dakota, including KELO in Sioux Falls. I have great affection for the Keloland stations, which include KDLO in Garden City and KPLO in Reliance - when we lived in The World's Worst Town™, we could pick up Keloland when the weather was decent. Being able to see anything on CBS, or have local programming that was superior to that on KCMT, was more than a treat; it was like a lifeline to sanity, to the outside world. Now, if decent television is all you have to worry about when you're a kid, you've got a pretty good life, so I'm not pretending television was all that was wrong with living there. It was just the bitter icing on a really bad cake. Just put your bad thoughts away and enjoy the week, with a number of dual-network stations to keep track of.

What's on TV? Monday, March 7, 1966

After being all over the place the last couple of weeks, it's nice to have our TV listings back on Monday where it belongs, isn't it? And this week we're in Nebraska, where we have a combination of stations from Omaha, Lincoln and North Platte, along with Sioux City, Iowa thrown in for good measure. There aren't any bombshells this week, but still some interesting stuff along the way. There must be a few shows you recognize here!

This is, if I'm not mistaken, our first look at the Nebraska/Iowa/South Dakota area, which means we'd better do a good job on it. I've mentioned in the past that one of my few fond memories of doing time in The World's Worst Town™ was the KELOland station we used to receive from South Dakota. It wasn't KELO, Channel 11 - I think it was either KDLO or KPLO, I can't remember which - but as the CBS affiliate, it was one of the few traces of the outside world to penetrate that little hole. Anyway, on with the show.
