What's on TV? Saturday, February 4, 1984

If you read this site on Saturday, you'll know that this week I was a bit cramped for time. My misfortune, however, is your opportunity. Rather than my ordinary commentary on the day's listings, I'm going to let you, the reader, fill in the blanks with any information you'd like to add to the shows below. It can be anything - anything at all. For instance, you might note that by 1984 we've seen the takeover by college basketball of the post-football weekend. It's everywhere, good games and bad. And to think we look back on this today and think there's hardly any basketball on at all.

I've gotten you started, now you take it from there while I get reacquainted with these local stations...

  1. Mitchell - I really enjoy your page & writings. Good luck with your move back to the Twin Cities! I'm a long-time reader, first time poster:

KTCA-2 5:00pm "Nature of Things" this long-running science & exploration program comes from Canada's public network: CBC-TV. Hosted by well-known & sometimes controversial Canadian scientist Dr David Suzuki, this hard-hitting show, while informative, often offers some 'tough love' for a planet in deep trouble. At other times, it's subject matter offers optimism & glimpses into our future. Critics of the show often feel that there's an underlay of left-leaning politics that taints the findings subjects chosen by Suzuki. "Nature of Things" is still in regular production & airs weekly on CBC television.

It's interesting to note that by the mid-1980's many stations a number of markets were operating 24 hours. It's hard to tell whether WCCO-4 is 24 hrs - it lists local news airing at 1:55 am & morning programs begin at 6 am. Was this continuous news until 6 am? However, chs 5, indie channel 9 & 11 all offer overnight programming. In my region, some stations in the nearby Seattle-Tacoma market, also Vancouver BC had overnight programming by the mid-80's too. I think one of the first in our area to do this was CBS outlet KIRO-7 Seattle & I believe this might have been due to newly available overnightt CBS news programming.

    1. Benny Hill was being sold in the USA as a strip - five nights a week.
Was WCCO carrying it that way, or just on the weekend?

And as long as I'm here:
Was Love Boat a two-hour special that week?
ABC did a bunch of those over the series run.
The normal occupant of that second hour would have been Fantasy Island, in what proved to be its final network season.
