What's on TV? Monday, March 18, 1968

It's a bilingual TV Guide this week; although our focus is on Buffalo and Rochester, we've also taken a brief foray across the border to Toronto, where as always we see an interesting mix of American and Canadian shows. CBLT, for example, picks up mostly CBS programming, with a Show of the Week starring Canadian hero Gordon Lightfoot. They also provide us with a rare glimpse of the famed British soap Coronation Street, before it would make its way to American TV. On the other hand, Hamilton's independent CHCH has a variety of syndicated programs that would be familiar on any American independent. Here you are - enjoy!

  1. Don't forget the classic CBC program, "Front Page Challenge" (impressive guests this week included Canadian author Pierre Berton). Of course, this was a perfect topic for SCTV when the station was forced to air CBC programming.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3wj3cB47vA

    1. Betty Kennedy, Gordon Sinclair and Pierre Berton were the regular panelists on FPC.

Interesting that neither ABC affiliate airs the ABC Evening News, and that both have only a 10 minute local broadcast at the odd 7:20 time (Rochester of course being WOKR, not WORK).

    2. RIP Betty Kennedy - March 21, 2017.

  2. Today, "Cancon" regulations severly limit how much of CBC Television's programming can come from the American networks.

Very little of CBC's schedule today, especially in prime-time, comes from the 'States.

By contrast, most of CTV's prime-time schedule is still made up of U.S. imports, as is most of Global's prime-time schedule (Global TV didn't come onto the scene until 1974, and then only in Ontario. It took several more years for Global to reach all of Canada).

  3. The Magistrate on "Magistrate's Court", was unintentionally hilarious, as a real gruff character. I used to watch it as a kid on CHCH all the time. One time, the court clerk was having trouble pronouncing a name. He says, "Those Polish names always throw me, your worship." The Magistrate shot him a dirty look and said, "I'm in no mood for your levity, court clerk!"
