NBC's daytime game lineup was killer, even though ABC gave it a good try with a couple of NBC retreads. You mention Brain From Planet Arous - a favorite clinker with a very over-the-top John Agar (one of four heavily rotated heroes in 50s sci-fi - Agar, Richard Denning, Jeff Morrow, Richard Carlson). Immortalized as part of the opening credits for the series Malcolm In The Middle. Thanks for the memory jog and the smiles.
ReplyDeleteBill Rippe who anchored WNBC's "Tonight's News" after "The Tonight Show," was a longtime staff announcer for the network. A sign-off newscast he "anchored" one late night/early morning at the start of the Labor Day weekend in 1979 has been on YouTube for the last couple of years. Their late-night movie skeins had differing titles depending on the genre of the film - "Tonight's ______." (Only Friday nights/Saturday mornings at that point went by "The Great Great Show," not applying to weeknights in general till 1966, and all nights until 1968.)
ReplyDeleteIt should be noted that WNBC already had stopped carrying the first 15 minutes of "The Tonight Show" by this point. It was that factor which led Johnny Carson, starting in February 1965, to not come on until 15 minutes after show startup, until NBC finally reduced the show to 90 minutes in early 1967.
As for Lisa Howard, this was a bit before she was canned by ABC for reasons that we won't get into here - and replaced as anchor on the 2:55 "News with a Woman's Touch" (that was the name, folks) by another lass named Marlene Sanders. The Bob Young that anchored the newscast at midnight on 7 is one and the same as anchoring ABC's evening newscasts in early 1968 - and then, from late 1968 to early 1971, WCBS-TV's "Eleven O'Clock Report."
