What's on TV, eh? Saturday, November 27, 1982

I don't believe I've ever before had the opportunity to use the phrase "Moose Jaw" on this blog, and that alone makes this issue worth looking at. ("Swift Current" isn't bad either, but it could easily have been the title of an episode of Last of the Mohicans,) Anyway, as you can see, today's programs present a combination of the familiar and the foreign. Afternoon programming is dominated on both CBC and CTV by tomorrow's Grey Cup, but there's plenty else to note. For example, both networks have nightly news programs to go along with the late local news; CBC's is hosted by the legendary Peter Mansbridge, who assumed the weeknight edition of The National in 1988 and remained there until July of 2017. You might also note that the version of Wide World of Sports that airs on CTV is a Canadian version, running two hours and including Canadian content. Otherwise, let's get to it and see what we can find - this is classified as the Saskatchewan edition.

CTV network news at 11 pm anchor is Sandie Rinaldo who is still anchoring the late night news for CTV after all these years

"Tommy Hunter Show" that airs on some CBC outlets at 10pm was a weekly country music show from Halifax & leaned heavily on performers from the Maritime provinces along with well-known US stars. This week a very young Vern Gosdin, plus Sonny James & actor Pat Buttram from "Petticoat Junction"

CBKST ch 11 airs a couple of delayed basis prime time CBC networks shows after the Grey Cup. At 5pm "Reach For The Top" was a long running Monday night staple that was a quiz show for high school students. At 5:30 is "Market Place" an excellent consumer affairs show that still airs in prime time on CBC.

CBKFT ch 13 is the CBC French language network - RC (Radio-Canada) At that time there was only one feed of this offered across Canada & it originated from Montreal. Note that it features an NHL hockey game with the Montreal Canadians & is different from the NHL game aired on the English network. This occurs even to this day. For those of us Canadians who do NOT speak French, it's common to watch the game with the TV sound turned down when one prefers the game offered on RC. If one is really lucky, one of the local sports radio stations is carrying the game to listen to for play-by-play & colour!

The stations & network affiliations in this 1982 listing have changed both before & after this listing. CTV outlet CKCK-TV ch 2 was originally a commercial broadcaster with CBC affiliation before the public broadcaster established it's own signals. These are CBKMT ch 4 Moose Jaw & CBKRT ch 9 Regina. The tale is somewhat complicated & involved, but Moose Jaw's ch 4 was originally commercial station CHAB-TV & it's translator CHRE-TV ch 9 Regina and both were CTV. The owner was forced by Canada's broadcast regulator - the CRTC - to sell these to CBC in order for the public network to have it's own channels in Sask. CBKST ch 11 in Saskatoon was established shortly thereafter & a few translators in the province were acquired by the CBC to improve it's service to all residents. Saskatoon's original lone channel was CFQC-TV ch 8 which signed on as a commercial outlet with CBC affiliation. However, when Canada's first commercial network - CTV - went live in 1959, ch 8 switched to the new network.

Although Mitchell notes this a province-wide Sask. edition, missing are commercial stations CKBI-TV ch 5 Prince Albert (CBC) CKOS-TV ch 3 Yorkton (CBC) which is no longer commercial & now owned by the CBC as a translator of CBK. Stations that have come on air since 1982 are CIPA-TV ch 9 Prince Albert (CTV); CFRE-TV ch 11 Regina (Global network); CFSK-TV ch 4 Saskatoon (Global)

    1. Unfortunately, all of the CBC's translators, as well as any CBC transmitter that does not originate any programming of its own, were shut down in 2012. These include what was CBKT-1, CBKST, CKBI and CKOS.

  3. CBLFT was a sister station to CBKFT and was broadcast from outside Kingston, ON. WE would tune in regularly to see what was on in French from upstate NY.

  4. I watched those edited half-hour WAYNE & SHUSTER shows for the short time they were syndicated here in the States.

  5. Couldn't let this one go without mentioning two Great Falls, MT stations that are probably still seen in some markets in the Provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. They are KRTV channel 3 (CBS primary, NBC secondary) and KFBB-TV channel 5 (ABC). For many years, KFBB had CBS as its' primary as part of the "Skyline Network" until KRTV switched to CBS in 1969 as part of the renamed Montana Television Network (MTN). They then shared NBC until the arrival of KTGF channel 16 in '86. KFBB now operates a satellite station in Helena, MT's state capital.

Speaking of which, the Montana edition of TV Guide was always a favorite for me, insofar as it covered three different time zones (Central, Mountan and Pacific). And the amount of channels listed was staggering! There were four stations on channel 2 alone (KTVQ Billings-CBS, KREM Spokeane, WA-also CBS, KUTV SLC-NBC, now CBS and indie KWGN in Denver, now with the CW). There were three on ch. 4 (KXLF Butte-CBS/ABC, KXLY Spokane and KTVX SLC, both ABC), 3 on ch. 5 (KFBB, KSL SLC-CBS, now NBC and KXGN Glendive-CBS/NBC-the last of the great multi-network stations). The Central time zone was repped by two Williston, ND stations, KUMV ch. 8 (NBC) satellite of KFYR-TV in Bismarck, and KXMD-TV ch. 11 (CBS) satellite of KXMC Minot (4X Network).

Out of all that, only one Canadian station was listed, independent CJOC-TV ch. 7 in Lethbridge, Alberta. I'd like to find a Montana edition on ebay from its' late '70's heyday. I've only seen one-and that one was from 1968!

BTW, MTN has now grown to a total of nine stations (7 CBS and 2 NBC affiliates). KXGN in Glendive is still MTN affiliated, tho it was never a true member of the network.

residents in southeast Alberta & southwest Sask. would have had access to the Great Falls channels with a good antenna. Those in southeast Sask. received the N Dak stations you listed. I do know of viewers in the Moose Jaw-Regina area who could receive the Minot, Bismark & Williston channels with good quality antennas mounted on tall towers in their yards. On cable TV all throughout Alberta, the US channels are the 4 commercial network channels from Spokane plus KSPS ch 7 (PBS). I think cable TV in parts of western Sask. also provide the Spokane channels & elsewhere the N Dak broadcasters. I could be wrong about this last statement. CJOC-TV ch 7 Lethbridge has in earlier times been both a CBC affiliate & CTV before going independent.
