The "Bell Telephone Science Special" pre-empted the "Bell Telephone Hour", so the Bell System didn't have to pre-empt a program sponsored by anyone else! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe correct title of "Jan Murray" was "Jan Murray's Charge Account", which was a game show and in several ways, was a predecessor to "Wheel Of Fortune".
ReplyDeleteAlthough "Charge Account" only ran for a couple of years at the start of the 1960's, a box-game version was sold in toy and department stores and was one of the top-selling "home game" versions of TV game shows.
You can often find the "Charge Account" home game on E-Bay.
It appears that KSTP Channel 5 pre-empted the first fifteen minutes of Jack Paar's "Tonight Show".
ReplyDeleteAn increasing number of NBC affiliates would do so through the early and mid 1960's, eventually forcing NBC to drop the 11:15-11:30 P.M. (Eastern; 10:15-10:30 Central) segment of "Tonight" (by then hosted by Johnny Carson at the start of 1967.
