What's on TV? Wednesday, January 4, 1967

We've visited Philadelphia before, but not very often, and I thoroughly enjoyed going through this issue. I particularly like the local programs: Florence (Philadelphia always had a strong local television presence; it's where Ernie Kovacs got his start.) Captain Philadelphia was played by Stu Nahan, who was also the original voice of the Philadelphia Flyers; I remember him from the hockey broadcasts on CBS in the late '60s. It's fun when you can see a familiar name like that. I suspect you'll find some of today's programs familiar as well.

  1. Stu Nahan is probably best known as the boxing announcer in the Rocky movies.

    1. He also appeared briefly in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" in Jeff Spicoli's dream sequence as a reporter who interviews Spicoli after Spicoli won a major surfing competition.

  2. Not much here to work with, so here are a few semi-irrelevant side notes:

    - Incredible Coincidence Dept.:
The other day I was looking over some of your past entries, whereupon I found your write-up on Natalie Trundy, whom I'd just seen on TCM's Planet Of The Apes marathon.
    That's not the coincidence.
This morning, I read at the MeToo site that Natalie Trundy passed away just before the turn of the year, aged 79 (before TCM's 'thon; it happens).

    - Last week, the morning mail (which lately has been arriving late in the afternoon, but that's another story) brought the Fall 2019 edition of The Gazette: The Journal of the Wolfe Pack, the Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe appreciation society to which I have belonged for over a decade and a half (give or take).
This issue's highlight was a transcript of a birthday tribute to Rex Stout, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, December 1, 1961.
The party was held at Sardi's restaurant in New York City.
Some of the quoted speakers included:
Songwriters Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz
    Playwright Moss Hart
    Lyricist Dorothy Fields
    Singer Marian Anderson
    Columnist Samuel Grafton
    Playwright Russel Crouse
    Journalist Norman Cousins
    Novelist John Hersey
Some friends of Stout's who served with him on the Writers War Board
… and Charles Van Doren, representing his father Mark Van Doren, who was unable to attend in person; the father sent a poem which was read by the son.

The Wolfe Pack puts out The Gazette twice a year for its members.
    Should you wish to join, membership costs $40.00 for two years;

  3. As was the case in several cities at the time with UHF independents, several network shows not cleared by either KYW Channel 3 or WFIL (now WPVI) Channel 6 got cleared by the UHF "indies".

No CBS program got bumped from WCAU Channel 10 to a UHF station since CBS owned WCAU at the time.

When Westinghouse, which owned KYW Channel 3 bought CBS, which owned WCAU in the mid 1990's, the merged company kept KYW and sold WCAU to NBC. Wouldn't it have been less confusing for Philadelphia-area viewers if Westinghouse/CBS had kept WCAU and sold KYW to NBC?

    1. Westinghouse worked too hard to get KYW back, after NBC forced them to accept a swap with the station the network owned in Cleveland--presumably the resentment lingered after all those years.
