I wish an episode of Joe Pyne's Showdown would crop up somewhere
ReplyDeleteJeez loueez, "The Bantams!" "Showdown, Showdown, Showdown / Showdown, Showdown, Showdown / Showdown, Showdown, Showdown / Showdown, Showdown - watch me now, hey!"
DeleteMaxkent, I remember two. One when he told a guest to go gargle with razor blades and the other when he interviewed Lee Harvey Oswald's mother...somewhere around 1966.
ReplyDeleteI remember when someone would give a wrong answer on Showdown, he'd drop through the floor
ReplyDeleteAs it happens, I saw the final episode of Showdown.
ReplyDeleteThe contestants (six, as I recall, all civilians) stood at podiums: three to Joe Pyne's left, three to his right, working as teams.
When a contestant missed a question, he would have to squat, out of camera range; three squats on one side, and the other side would win that round.
Next round, and everybody had to stand again; I'm guessing that there weren't many returning champions (this was years ago, so my details are a trifle foggy).
No trapdoors here; NBC wouldn't have sprung for the insurance.
Actually, on this show, Joe Pyne was fairly well-behaved.
His syndicated talk show was another matter; Pyne often booked guests for the express purpose of provoking them into rages.
At one point, he even had a sidekick (whose name I can't recall) who was ruder than Joe was - and he was the one who did the "razor blades" line, which Pyne ended up getting blamed for.
Such was life back in the '60s; we sure have come a long way since then …
Of course I'm looking back over 54 years too, but I remember contestants dropping out of the picture and it looked to me like they were falling...and I remember the kiddie band -- a bunch of little blonde boys. In any case, even through my toddler's eyes, it seemed like a pretty bizarre show.
