What's on TV: Thursday, December 4, 1958

I mentioned on Saturday that this was a week of specials, but for today's feature I chose a day with no specials, a chance to take a look at an ordinary schedule before it becomes overloaded with Christmas festivities. That's not to say there aren't interesting things to see. For example, look at The Pat Boone Show on ABC. This has to be one of the few instances in this 62-year-old issue (outside of shows with child actors) in which both the star and one of the guests, future Hogan's Heroes star Robert Clary, are still with us. That alone makes it special, don't you think? It all comes from the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. Assuming that "always reliable" Wiki is correct, Pat Boone's other guest, Jeannie Carson, is also still with us at the age of 92, as is her 94-year-old actor husband, Biff McGuire.

  2. Bits & Pieces:

    - NBC's 8 PM show is Behind Closed Doors which I think I might have mentioned here some time back.
This was a military 'docu-drama', a type of show that was mildly popular during this time; the service in play here was United States Naval Intelligence, so this was '50s spy stuff, introduced by "Lt. Cdr. Matson" as played by Bruce Gordon (before he got the gig on That Other Series).
    - ... and I still say that you shoulda seen him in USN dress blues ...

    - Playhouse 90 this week is a sitcom - "Free Week-End", about overbearing parents who make their kids miserable at summer camp.
Hey, they had to do a new one every week; they couldn't all be prize-winners ...

    - This season, ABC gave the 9:00 pm hour to the stations, so that's why each of the local affils has a different syndie show filling the spots, with the option of putting John Daly's 15-minute network newscast wherever it might fit (and you can see how the two ABC stations here worked that out).
Here in Chicago, Channel 7 carried Daly in the scheduled slot, filling the rest of the time with local news, weather, and a syndie half-hour (Tonight, it was J. Carrol Naish as Charlie Chan).

    - Once again, I'm noting a lot of mix-'n'-match in Duluth, which didn't have an ABC station at this point, but you already knew that didn't you?

    - On this night in Chicago, there were two local TV Debuts to choose from at 9 PM.
Channel 9 was showing The Bells Of St. Mary's, with Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman.
While over at Channel 7, there was Citizen Kane, which Red Quinlan was obviously holding for a special occasion.
Big Movies were still something of a novelty on the home screen in '58; the major studios were still parceling out their best-known releases like St. Mary's, while Kane had been sitting on Ch.7's shelf for a couple of years (it had been part of the station's total buy of the RKO library in '57).
Never underestimate the power of local numbers - at least at that point of history.

    - In the past, there's been mention made of how series that were still in first-run would syndicate earlier episodes with name changes.
In today's list, we note Ten-Four (Highway Patrol), Jeff's Collie (Lassie), Jet Jackson (Captain Midnight), Sherwood Forest (Robin Hood), and I thought I spotted San Francisco Beat (The Lineup) and Badge 714 (Dragnet), but I guess not.
Were any viewers really fooled by the retitles?
Well, my brother and I were both under ten years of age at the time - and somehow we figured it out ...

    1. Oopsie:

Of course, I meant that the two Big Movies were at 10 PM (Central Standard Time).
      Rest of the comment stands.

      More later, maybe ...
