What's on TV: Tuesday, December 28, 1971

Here we are, on the final Tuesday of 1971.  On Saturday, Cleveland Amory delivered his verdicts on several of the season's more disappointing series, and throughout this issue we can see evidence that some of these shows have already run out of time. Tonight, for instance, is the final episode of The Funny Side, and Sarge will air its final episode on January 11. James Garner as Nichols (yes, that's its full name) has until March, despite the unusual decision to kill off Garner's character in the final episode and replace him withJames Garner. Well, the clock is always ticking on failure, but there's also plenty to be seen in this listing from the New York City edition, such as an all-star week on The Mike Douglas Show, featuring Sammy Davis Jr. So don't despair; 1972 will be a better year. Right?

  1. "Attaboy Luther"- mystery voice played by Everett Greenbaum in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken as seen on Channel 4's 4pm movie. :D

Everett was a prolific TV writer. He wrote for such series The Andy Griffith Show, M*A*S*H, Sanford and Son and various others, as well as the Don Knotts films he did for Universal.

As an aside, Mitchell, I have a question to ask you. Where do you get the artwork for the headers used on the website. I've always been intrigued by them.

Anyways, I hope you have a happy 2021.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Sean, and I hope you'll continue to have a happy holiday season and 2021 as well.

As far as the artwork, some have come from various Google searches for things like "vintage TV ads." However, most of them are details I've taken from various works by Charles Schridde, adapted for the available space. You can see many of them here: https://www.atomic-ranch.com/home-decor/charles-schridde/

The logo I designed myself, and the text at the bottom is something I've just superimposed. Stay tuned; could be more headed that way next year!

    2. Next time you're in a used bookstore, see if you can find Everett Greenbaum's memoir, The Goldenberg Who Couldn't Dance.
He published it in 1980, and it's a brief book, since his career went a decade longer, but there's a lot of great stories, and much to learn about people you thought you knew.

... And if you're watching Matlock reruns on MeTV (or wherever), be on the lookout for Everett Greenbaum's appearances as part of the regular rotation of judges (along with Aneta Corsaut, among others).

  2. I notice that prime time still starts at 7:30 PM ET even though the prime time access rule for the Big 3 networks kicked in at the beginning of 1971. It looks like the half hour they gave back to the local stations is at 10:30 rather than 7:30. Except for ABC, that is. They still have the full 3 1/2 hour prime time block going from 7:30 to 11:00. I seem to recall ABC got some kind of special dispensation to not have to give up the half hour on Tuesday nights only so as not to break up their successful Tuesday night lineup. In return they gave up another half hour another night in the week.
