What's on TV? Saturday, February 11, 1961

There's something relaxed about this Saturday's lineup. It's not wall-to-wall sports crammed into the afternoon; just some college and pro basketball, and a replay of an NFL game from last fall. Prime time is full of easy favorites, from Perry Mason and Gunsmoke on CBS (Actually, their whole lineup is very watchable), to The Roaring 20s and Lawrence Welk on ABC. It is funny, though, to not see Saturday Night at the Movies on NBC; it's not far away though—just wait until the fall. I'm sure you can find your favorites from this Minneapolis-St. Paul Edition; just don't look for KTCA, as the educational station doesn't yet broadcast on the weekends.

  1. Just For Fun:
Here, from my Chicago edition, are the primetime lists for the two Rockford IL stations:

    WREX-TV, Channel 13 (ABC/CBS):
5:30 pm: Dick Sinclair's Polka Parade (syndicated).
6:00 pm: Walt Disney Presents (ABC, delayed from the previous Sunday).
7:00 pm: Stagecoach West (ABC, delayed from the previous Tuesday).
8:00 pm: Lawrence Welk's Dancing Party (ABC, day-and-date).
    9:00 pm: Gunsmoke (CBS, day-and-date).
9:30 pm: Have Gun - Will Travel (CBS, delayed from an hour earlier).
10:00 pm: Sea Hunt (Syndicated, still in first-run).
10:30 pm: San Francisco Beat (Syndie rerun of The Lineup).
    11:00 pm: Local news.
11:30 pm: Movie: Tennessee Johnson (1942), cleaned-up biopic about the 17th president, with Van Heflin.

    WTVO (Channel 39, NBC).
5:00 pm: Flash Gordon, one hour of the Buster Crabbe serial.
6:00 pm: National Velvet (NBC, delayed from the previous Sunday).
    6:30 pm: Bonanza (NBC, day-and-date).
7:30 pm: The Tall Man (NBC, day-and-date).
8:00 pm: The Deputy (NBC, day-and-date).
8:30 pm: Phil Silvers/Bilko (Syndicated rerun, bumping an NBC News show).
9:00 pm: The Fight Of The Week (ABC, day-and-date)
10:00 pm: Movie: The Eternal Sea (1955), with Sterling Hayden as an admiral who loses a leg in combat, but fights to stay on active duty.
    11:00 pm: Local News.

    Notes:
    - Does an NBC station carrying an ABC fight seem strange to you?
Just wait until Sunday night, when NBC-Channel 39 carries the live CBS broadcast of Ed Sullivan!
... which they did for most of the Fifties, until CBS got its own station in Rockford (This year, Channel 13 was carrying ABC's Maverick and Lawman, day-and-date.)
    - Oh, and on Wednesdays, Channel 39 bypassed NBC's regular shows to carry ABC's Naked City, day-and-date.
    - ... while Channel 13 ran the Saturday episode of Perry Mason Wednesday at 10:30 pm.
Don't ask why - they just did.

Back later on - maybe ...
