What's on TV? Friday, March 8, 1968

It's interesting to reflect on how many daytime game shows have had simultaneous  network primetime runs over the years. Today, we see the nighttime version of The Hollywood Squares in its eight-month evening run as a replacement for the cancelled Accidental Family.  Password, The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, Let's Make a Deal, I've Got a Secret, The Price is Right, To Tell the Truth—all of them did double duty in the 1960s (I'm sure I'm overlooking others), and several of them had long syndicated runs as well. Ah tthese are the days, aren't they? Well. This week's listings are from Philadelphia—enjoy!

  1. It was because of this prime time version of HOLLYWOOD SQUARES that Monty Hall moved LET'S MAKE A DEAL from NBC to ABC at the end of 1968. NBC did give LET'S MAKE A DEAL a prime time run May-Sept. 1967 to replace the cancelled HEY, LANDLORD!, but when NBC chose not to give his show a prime time slot in 1968, Monty Hall took his show over to ABC, which gladly put his show in prime time early in 1969.

  2. "THIRD REICH SPECIAL

“Judd” will not be seen tonight."

Oh, no! Was Judd sent to a concentration camp...?!

  3. In an interview for "Archive of American Television", Hall said he left NBC for ABC with #LMaD because he felt the peacock web cheated him and Stefan Hatos out of their rightful share of the profits. Hall would have bolted for ABC earlier if he didn't have a 2-year contract with NBC, and he was a man of his word. ABC offered him a blank check, but, IMO, the move would have been mired in litigation.

  4. I noticed the all day stock market coverage on ch 29. Is that "Stock Market Observer," which I first saw later that year on a Dallas independent station, and later had a local production on New York's channel 9?
