What's on TV? Monday, June 28, 1965

A couple of shows debut on ABC in today's lineup; you can see one of them above. A Time for Us is a retooled version of the low-rated A Flame in the Wind, which premiered in 1964. The new and improved version, made over by soap maven Irna Phillips, survives almost to the end of 1966. That’s preceded by the Dick Clark-produced pop music show Where the Action Is, hosted by Linda Scott and Steve Alaimo, and frequently featuring Paul Revere and the Raiders. Since we didn’t get around to discussing cover story Hullabaloo on Saturday, I’m afraid this is as close as you’ll get. This one ran until the end of March, 1967—not bad for a mid-afternoon music variety show. We’ve also got the usual accompaniment of ABC shows popping up on other affiliated stations, but that’s part of what makes these Minnesota State Editions so entertaining, right?

  1. The cover article was about HULLABALOO, not SHINDIG, but it's often hard to tell the differences among these shows.

  2. Off-topic, but I can't resist:

Yesterday, I took delivery of the latest issue of The Digest Enthusiast, which is concerned with digest-sized fiction magazines, which particularly proliferated in the '50s and '60s (and are still around today, in slightly amended form - but that's another story ...).
The new issue features a friend of ours from the sidebar: Jack Seabrook, who has worked up a feature about Ed McBain's Mystery Book, issue #3, from early 1961.
McBain's was published by Pocket Books (the paperback arm of Simon & Schuster), in an attempt to compete with the many mystery digests around at the time, including the Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock, Saint, Mike Shayne mystery magazines, plus Manhunt and some others.
Apparently, Pocket Books felt that their list of crime writers would give them a leg up on other digests in getting newsstand space - big-name writers were the equivalent of box-office in that line.
Pocket Books launched McBain's late in 1960, with high hopes of lapping the field - but the third issue (the one Jack's writing about here) turned out to be the final one.
It was likely a corporate decision to curtail McBain's so early, particularly in light of the imminent launch of the 87th Precinct TV series in fall of '61, which could only have helped.
If that whole story has been written up somewhere, I'd love to read it; meanwhile, I do have the three issues of McBain's that were done, so there's that (from Jack's article, I inferred that he only has Number Three, so maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that - sorry).
Back to Digest Enthusiast: they put out two issues a year, in January and June; they're in color, slick, kinda pricey, but you learn a lot and have fun doing it.
Additionally, they publish some original fiction - and in this issue, Jack Seabrook has contributed a new story titled "Assisted Dying", which I'm looking forward to reading soon.
Jack's detailed review of Ed McBain's Mystery Book #3 is a story-by-story accounting of a 1961 magazine, aimed at the general public; why it succeeded or failed, I guess we'll never really know (sort of like popular TV, really).
Anyhow, I did want to tell you about The Digest Enthusiast, and to get in the shout-out to Jack Seabrook, so there's that.
I think I'll go back and take another look at the TV Guide - there's gotta be something else in there ...

  3. "Where The Action Is" got it's title from the fact that it's performances (actually lip-synched) were taped on location at various spots around the country, mostly in or near Los Angeles.
