What's on TV? Saturday, March 15, 1969

It’s a smaller lineup than usual this week, thanks to the educational channels not broadcasting on the weekend. That doesn’t mean we have less to check out, though. For instance, there’s NBC’s Saturday Night at the Movies presentation of The Vikings, with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, and Janet Leigh.  Judith Crist calls it “an idiot-level spectacular that passes off Ernest Borgnine as the viking daddy of Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis, as incredible a pair of blood brothers as you’d encounter in a comic strip, which this is in essence.” Well, maybe not. My money is on the basketball doubleheader in the afternoon (I discussed this on Saturday), and Jackie Gleason in the evening, with a fine lineup of comedians. And unlike The Vikings, they’re being funny on purpose. This week’s listings are from Northern California.

  1. I remember seeing "Stuart Little" as listed for NBC CHILDREN'S THEATRE on film at a Saturday morning program at my elementary school in the mid-1970s. I think it was the only version of that story on film until the 1990s version where Michael J. Fox provided Stuart's voice.
The episode of STORYBOOK SQUARES that I've seen in video trade then later on YT has the same celerbrities as listed today, but I always thought the date of that episode was Feb. 22, 1969. I think 2 shows were taped with the same celebrities, probably on the same day. Abby Dalton was the last of the 9 celebrities to pass away, but host Peter Marshall is still with us and (Lord willing) will turn 97 years young next week.

    1. Until I started seeing them in TV Guide, I have to admit forgetting all about "Storybook Squares," but I did watch them back in the day. I haven't watched clips of it in quite a while; I wonder if it's as funny without the double entendres that made the original so funny.

    2. In re Storybook Squares:
To get onto Heatter-Quigley's bench for the Squares shows, double entendre was a required skill set - and the ability to make it work for both older kids and grown-ups would have been how H-Q cast these shows in the first place.
Then as now, kids are a lot hipper than certain adults have ever given them credit for - at least my brother, sisters and I were (and for South Side Irish Catholic kids like we were, "getting away with something" meant a lot ...)

  2. I see another MST3K Alert on channel 3: "The Day the Earth Froze", one of those Russo-Finnish productions that are as beautifully filmed as they are incomprehensible (at least in the form we got).

    1. That's for sure. I don't think I've been able to watch the whole thing more than once.
