Speaking of classics, as we often do here since this is a classic TV website, one of the all-time sitcom classics airs at 11:30 on WXIX: the Chuckles the Clown episode of Mary Tyler Moore. It doesn't get much better than that. And look at the listings between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., at how many black and white shows stations are showing. Not all of them, mind, but many of them. That's how I learned about the classics when I was a tot, and I'm sure many of you were the same. The listings, by the way, are from the Kentucky edition.

This was the day before the last day that the original PYRAMID show was on ABC, and the last network version taped in NYC. $50K PYRAMID (the last version from NYC) was syndicated starting the next January, and the show was back in network tv. I remember at the end of the Friday show, Bill Cullen (who hosted the syndicated version) and Dick Clark talked about the show, and there were 6 joke categories in a phony "bonus" round, including "Hit Shows on NBC" (I'm sure ABC loved this one.) and another about a rare category of Rabbis.
ReplyDeleteMy kind of categories!
DeleteThe next network version of any PYRAMID show would be the first to be taped in Los Angeles ("The New $25,000 Pyramid" from Television City in Hollywood on CBS in September of 1982)
Delete"...here he goes again with Edge Of Night ..." :
ReplyDeleteLooking over the various cities listed here, I noticed that two of the three ABC stations were carrying on a one-day delay in early morning time slots, while the third station wasn't carrying it at all.
Edge was the only soap on ABC that the network didn't own; Procter & Gamble had the control over content and casting, and ABC let their attention slide over time, while the affiliates did as they pleased (which was very little).
In 1980, Edge was still being headwritten by the great Henry Slesar; this was one of the seasons when he was Emmy-nominated for his work.
The week before the one you're covering here, Edge changed its opening titles, updating the music and showing its leading players, so they were at least trying to whip up interest.
Herewith, I renew an old Challenge:
Many Edge episodes from this period can be found on YouTube.
I direct your attention to the episode from June 16, 1980 (the previous Monday from the day covered here; this show would have been seen in Cincy and Louisville the next day).
I invite you (and anyone you might care to have join you at the computer) to watch this particular episode; maybe whip up some popcorn and make an evening of it, or something like that ...
No spoilers here - just watch the show cold, and see if anything catches your notice.
And remember: you're looking at a show that was made forty-three (43) years ago...
Just give it a look, and report back here whenever you can.
I'll be here!
Mike,
DeleteAre you referring to a certain actress making (I believe) her television debut?
A certain not-quite-16-year-old actress (who now has daughters who are older today than she was then) - yeah, you got that right ...
