The Democratic "Political Talk" which all three networks are offering Sunday morning is the party's official response to President Nixon's State of the Union speech from a couple of weeks ago. Each network has its own approach; NBC has delegated one hour, and ABC 55 minutes (allowing for the intro to its NBA Game of the Week), but CBS has given the Democrats 45 minutes—the same length of time which Nixon's speech ran—with the remaining 15 minutes given over to analysis of the presentation. Sunday morning seems, at first glance, to be an odd time for a rebuttal—as if the networks were sticking it into a "dead air" time. However, Sunday morning is, after all, the time when political discussion programs are usually aired, so it probably draws the appropriate audience. Also, the SOTU was given in the afternoon; had it been a primetime address, I suspect the response would have been as well. Nowadays, the response is prepared in advance and given immediately following the speech, as if it had nothing to do with the contents of the speech itself. That's progress, I guess. We're looking this week at the slimmed-down Northern California listings.

TV
Some fascinating sports programming nuggets from that era with the Wonderful World of Golf and the CBS Golf Classic featuring interesting names like Lee Trevino, Julius Boros, Frank Beard, George Archer and Deane Beman who many years later would become PGA commissioner. And some NBA and NHL coverage when I was a big fan of those leagues back in the early 70s.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see how much of the sports of the 60s and early 70s was of the made-for-TV type, such as the golf shows. Personally, I think those could be even more interesting than actual tournaments; at least we were guaranteed we'd recognize the names of the players. I do miss those Games of the Week on Sundays as well; now that TV is saturated with sports, they somehow don't seem to have as much importance.
DeleteCompletely agree Mitchell with both those observations from the TV sports scene in those days. Yes, the NBA and NHL "games of the week" so to speak on the weekends were indeed a big deal. And of course the same with the MLB Saturday Game of the Week. I'm a lifelong Pirates fan, and KDKA televised about 30-35 road games every year - that was it. None of the Wrigley day games except on weekends and none from San Fran or LA. And no home games. So whenever the Pirates were on the Game of the Week, it was an "event" for sure. And those golf events were fun with some of the banter among the players. Great era for sure!!
ReplyDeleteSure made the weekends more interesting than they are today!
