What's on TV? Monday, July 17, 1961

We came very close, it would appear, to having a different lede altogether for today, one not nearly as light-hearted; as it is, however, it's business as usual, at least looking at the week's TV listings. And a good thing it is, because today we have one of those wonderful juxtapositions in programming that I'm so fond of, the kind that almost makes you wonder if the local stations conspired to create the effect for TV Guide readers. At 11:25 p.mn., WHIO in Dayton is showing the movie The Devil is a Woman, with May Britt. Meanwhile, at 11:30 p.m., WCPO in Cincinnati has Brigette Bardot in That Naughty Girl. So who do you go with? When it comes to misbehaving, you've got to go with Bardot, right? This unintended humor, as well as the rest of the listings, comes from the Southern Ohio edition.

  1. On your first sentence.
A few weeks ago, my wife and I decided to start watching classic TV comedy on the weekends. Shows we haven't seen in a while. Sgt. Bilko, The Honeymooners, Bewitched, F-Troop, Hogan's Heroes Get Smart and Car 54.
I didn't find out about the events on Saturday until the next morning, when I went on Facebook and saw some really inappropriate and cruel postings from many of my liberal friends. Many appeared to have stayed up into the wee hours of the morning commenting on the event.
Hey, I don't like the guy either, but there are limits. Psychologically, what they were doing could not be healthy.
Glad I spent the evening with Hogan, Bilko, Ralph Kramden, Maxwell Smart, Toody and Muldoon instead.
Mentally I was in a far better place.

  2. Notice how all of the WLW stations run the very popular Ruth Lyons each weekday at 12 Noon for 90 minutes. She supposed started the daytime talk show on radio when she was working as the station organist in the 1920’s. When the regular host didn’t show up, she was pressed in the service and then given the job! She began doing television simultaneously with radio in the late 1940’s. She was an icon of Ohio broadcasting!!

    1. Don't know if you ever saw this, but I did a bit on what might be the only intact copy of an entire Ruth Lyons radio show. https://www.itsabouttv.com/2019/01/the-cincinnati-legend-and-legendary-day.html I loved researching this background!
