I chose Friday for this week's listing because it's the only weekday not broken up by convention coverage, so it's the only day that really gives us a look at what's on. And the Illinois-Wisconsin Edition gives us quite a look; for the last few years I've tried to include in the listings all the local stations from the edition, but one of the things you notice as you get into 1980s TV Guides is the proliferation of stations, especially on the UHF side of the dial. There are 23 channels in this week's edition, including 11 UHF channels, and my dedication to providing you a comprehensive look at what's on does have its limits. Instead, I've opted to focus on Chicago and Milwaukee, and I think that gives us a pretty good sampling, don't you?

TV
I see that JIM ROCKFORD, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR is listed on a couple stations. I think this was among the last substitute titles for syndicated shows that were still on the network. MASH was after all syndicated as MASH even though it still lasted 4 more seasons on CBS primetime. NBC cancelled THE ROCKFORD FILES in 1980, so the syndicated title probably reverted to that in the next month or so.
ReplyDeleteMike Douglas' co-host this week, Barbara Mandrell, headlined her own NBC prime-time variety show three months later. Not knowing when that program was first announced, was her appearance to get some emcee experience under her belt, or was she approached for her own series because of an acceptable showing here?
ReplyDeleteHad completely forgotten that Jeff Goldblum had a sort of TV career before going on to do blockbuster movies. I'll have to take a look at Tenspeed and Brownshoe. With Stephen J. Cannell writing it, it couldn't be all bad.
