Here's a clue as to how old, culturally, this week's issue is: Barbra Streisand, one of Merv Griffin's guests (2:00 p.m., WBZ), is described as a singer-comedienne, not a singer-actress, singer-director, or just plain singer. She had been nominated for a Tony for the Broadway comedy "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," and Groucho Marx liked her sense of humor; of course, she made a number of movie comedies after becoming a big star. I just never thought of her that way. Maybe it's because I'm not a fan. And not only that, her first name was spelled "Barbara." I have to assume this was a typo, because I'd hate to think they didn't know any better. Although I don't usually do this, I did take the liberty of making the correction in the listings below, which come to you from Eastern New England.

TV
"I Can Get It For You Wholesale" was a Broadway smash and where Barbra met Elliot Gould, whom she'd marry in 1963.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you've written about "Stoney Burke" before but it was only on for about a year and starred Jack Lorde of Hawaii Five-O, along with the 70's movie greats Bruce Dern and Warren Oates. 1962-3 seems like a transition season for television, before more interesting things started happening in comedy, especially.
"Barbara" is Barbra Streisand's birth name. She changed it to "Barbra" sometime around 1962 because she hated the name "Barbara". Also it made her unique. I think that most people who see the name "Barbra" think of Ms. Streisand, whereas "Barbara" may just as well have been Ms. Billingsley at the time. I'm not a fan of her personally, but she was fantastic as a comedienne in "What's Up, Doc", among my 10 favorite movies. (I don't have an actual list, but I know a few movies I would put in the list, and that's one of them.)
ReplyDeleteNorma McMillan (I guess it was spelled "McMillian" in the magazine), who was on the same show, was the voice of Casper the Friendly Ghost and Sweet Polly Purebread, as well as the mother by this time of child actors Stefan & Alison Arngrim.
