What's on TV? Tuesday, October 3, 1972

We're back in Atlanta this week as part of the Georgia Edition, back in the pre-Superstation days when WTCG stood for "Turner Communications Group." In 1972, Channel 17 has only been on the air for five years (the local story was that WTCG stood for "Watch This Channel Grow"), but I think you can already see the seeds of what it would become in its Superstation days (minus the Braves games, of course). Now, it goes under the call letters of WPCH, and is known as "Peachtree TV." All good things come to an end, I guess. Also, if you were wondering, that "Woodruff" that's one of the anchors on WAGA is, in fact, Judy Woodruff, who will go on to much bigger and better things in her broadcasting career. Here is WTCG, Channel 17, circa 1972, pre-Superstation, pre-Atlanta Braves. The "TCG" stands for Turner Communications Group, although they like to say it means "Watch This Channel Grow." The programs still start on the hour and half-hour instead of five minutes after each, and the programming is entirely conventional for an independent station: cartoons, movies, and even a couple of network programs that aren't cleared by WSB, the NBC affiliate that prefers to air Mike Douglas instead. In other words, it's business as usual, the lull before the storm, TV as we've always known it. It's the Georgia edition this week, with added programming from Chattanooga.

First of all, for those of you in the U.S., a happy Fourth of July! Old joke: What do they call today in England? Answer: The fourth of July, just like they do everywhere else! Ha!

Seriously, on Saturday I took a look at the Independence Day programming in Atlanta, as well as the budding superstation WTBS, which was then known as WTCG. I don't have a great deal of additional background on TV in Georgia's largest city, so we'll get right to the listings, and if any of you out there have anything to add, please feel free to chip in!
