NET's "Importance of Being Earnest" cast is a very strong one - Ian Carmichael, who did very well as Lord Peter Wimsey for Masterpiece Theatre; Patrick Macnee, John Steed himself; and Susannah York, who was in all kinds of British movies in the '60s and '70s. Not a bad cast at all.

Steve Allen never seemed to be off television for too long at a time, did he? He went from What's My Line? to Tonight, and then to his head-to-head battle against Ed Sullivan, before hosting the last days of I've Got a Secret. In-between, he had another go at late-night on a syndicated program, and found time to do summer replacements such as the one above. He went on other shows, including Meeting of Minds, and kept writing books and songs. I'm tired just writing this.

Looking at that lineup for Hollywood Squares, it's always strange to see Paul Lynde's name missing, so much did he become synonymous with the show. However, he hasn't yet become a regular, and Charley Weaver and Wally Cox are the two go-to figures on the panel.

Ah, the Jack LaLanne program. Loved the reruns that ran on ESPN Classic a few years ago. Yes, his shtick might seem a little corny nowadays, but you still can get a surprisingly good workout by following his exercise plan. He was a guest on a Peter Gunn episode I saw not too long ago; his segment was practically an infomercial! Probably wrote all of his lines himself.

Frank Reynolds and Keith McBee were filling-in for a young Peter Jennings, who spent August of 1967 while the latter was on assignment in Vietnam.
ReplyDeleteBurgess Meredith as a guest co-host? I don't think I've ever seen a guest co-host of "Today"; was that at all common then?
