What's on TV? Wednesday, August 5, 1970

Back in the Big Apple, we've advance one year since we were here a couple of weeks ago. It's a slice of life from 1970; Summer Semester is beginning to study the Eisenhower years, we're hearing the other side of the story of the Pueblo incident, Vietnam and drugs are still everyday parts of the scene. The entertainment is all about the era as well.

It's not a typo on the guest list for The Mike Douglas Show - the artist formerly known as "Bobby Darin" is in his social justice phase, singing folk and protest songs. By the time of his television comeback covering the last couple of years of his life, he's back to calling himself Bobby, wearing a tux, and singing "Mack the Knife."

Lloyd Bucher, one of the guests on Today, is the former captain of the U.S.S. Pueblo which, if you remember your history, was captured by the North Koreans in January 1968, undergoing psychological torture for almost a year before being released in December 1968. Bucher, who was nearly court-martialed over the Pueblo incident, is on the show to promote his book My Story.

In 1973 ABC Theater aired a Missiles of October-like adaptation of the story starring Hal Holbrook as Bucher; Holbrook won two Emmys for the performance, one for best actor in a drama, the other for best overall actor.

  1. "Where's Huddles"---the early 70's attempt at copying the Flintstones which were copied from the Honeymooners, only with a professional QB as the titular lead with a short, dumpy neighbor who is his center. Toss in a big doofy dog named fumbles and you have the HB formula....perfect for the 7:30 time slot that actually justified Newton Minow's "Vast Wasteland" prediction a few years before. The one unique item? A neighbor part written specifically for Paul Lynde, if, as Mitchell always says in qualification, "we can believe the ever reliable Wikipedia..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where's_Huddles%3F

  4. Mitchell,
I think you made an error with Johnny Carson. You show him on Channel 3 WTIC(now WFSB) instead of WNBC-TV Channel 4. The listings as currently shown has Channel 3's movie (Hero's Island) airing for only 5 minutes before Johnny, while Channel 4 has its Eleventh Hour News lasting an unheard of 2 hours, in 1970, followed by another 15 minute newscast. It wouldn't be until either the 1990's or 2000's when you would find a news block that long. :o

In other news, The New York Mets had a game aired on both flagship WOR(now WWOR)-9 and WNHC(now WTNH)-8. Per retrosheet.org The Mets would win that night's game 5-3 in St. Louis. Notice the start time of 9 PM Eastern/ 8PM Central. Games actually started that late back in the 1960's and 1970's. However, they played much quicker as the game only took 2 hours 20 minutes to complete. I think if had both the 1970 game go head-to-head with a 2017 game, and gave the 2017 an hour's head start, the finish time for the 1970 game would still be sooner. Something fun to think about. :)

  5. I'm glad I wasn't living in New Haven back then. Its network affiliates were terrible when it came to clearing network programming, especially in the daytime.

  6. Love the site!! ISTR on WTIC channel not airing Where The Heart Is, I recall the station starting a noon newscast when WTHI debuted. Of course, I was 6 years old at the time, so I may be fuzzy on this. I always remember joking about the show being set in CT, yet WTIC never carried it.

  7. I'd easily pay $50 or $60 for a DVD set of the great Slattery's People, unfortunately this is never going to happen. It's really a shame, one of the best dramas of the 60's.
