What's on TV? Friday, September 19, 1975

An interesting Friday night to look at; one of the reasons I was drawn to this date was that there are lots of programs here that you don't ordinarily associate with Fridays. M*A*S*H? Only for three months, but this date fell in that range. Hawaii Five-O? I always think of it on Wednesday or Thursdays, but here it is on Friday, for those same three months, as was Barnaby Jones. Five-O, Barnaby, Rockford, and Police Woman make up four hours of crime dramas on Fridays, and a crime drama (The Kansas City Massacre) for a movie. Quite a way to end the week, isn't it? Let's get started; we're looking at the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. 2 of these game shows listed may still exist in 1 form or another. I've seen an episode of CELEBRITY SWEEPSTAKES at the NYC Paley Museum, donated by Andy Warhol himself, that featured Gavin McLeod in position #1, and he's listed on the show this week, and THE CHINA SYNDROME is known for having a background clip of THE MAGNIFICENT MARBLE MACHINE with Joan Rivers playing the machine with a contestant partner.

I'm sure I spent many weekdays the previous summer watching that CBS afternoon game show lineup. I loved watching MUSICAL CHAIRS in particular, and I liked TATTLETALES even more than MATCH GAME.

  2. 1. Joyce Bulifant has a book coming out detailing her 4 marriages and how alcohol and co-dependency played a part. 2. On "Musical Chairs," one of the stars that week, Don Stewart appeared as lawyer Mike Bauer on Guiding Light. 3. Lawrence Welk pre-empting Sanford and Son? As Fred G. himself would say, "You Big Dummy!"

  3. Uh, is it just me, or is there too much money on Pyramid? The $100,000 version didn't come along until 1985 in syndication; at this point, the ABC version was still The $10,000 Pyramid, which had two fine game players in Anne Meara and Tony Randall. BTW, it would not be long until the show's top prize would be increased to $20,000. That happened the following year, in 1976.

  4. CBS specifically moved those shows to Friday to blunt the surprise success of NBC's lineup.

    2. Of course. with M°A°S°H, Hawaii Five-O, and Barnaby Jones, how could they go wrong. You know how CBS rolled. Paley, Dr. Stanton, and Silverman did not play.

    3. I must correct myself. Channel 10 in Rochester, MN was KROC. However, they became KTTC in July '76
