What's on TV? Tuesday, September 19, 1972

As you can tell, I've survived the weekend at the Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, which I'll be writing more about later this week, and I'm back just in time to take you through this week's listings, from New York City.

On of the things that always puzzled me about TV Guide is how they determined which programs would receive the little category label following the title. You know - "Joker's Wild - Game." It's much more prevalent in the issues of the late '50s and '60s than it is here in the early '70s - look, for example, at the CBS prime time lineup. Nothing after I've Got a Secret, Maude, or Hawaii Five-O. Why not? Is it assumed that we know what kinds of shows they are? A new series like ABC's Temperatures Rising has one, and that makes sense because it's a new show, whereas Marcus Welby, M.D., an old favorite, doesn't need one. Look at the soaps - excuse me, "serials" - during the day. No labels there, either. None of the game shows in NBC's morning schedule have them, but the ones in the afternoon do. I know sometimes it depends on how much room there is after the title; don't add a label if it means adding a line. But it does seem arbitrary at the same time. Maybe there's a more elaborate pattern I couldn't see when I was a kid and can't now, or maybe I think about these things too much.

  1. These identifiers might have been unique to the region for which the TV Guide was published. In Colorado, I don't remember EVER seeing these program type tags in the 60's and 70's, nor the newscaster identifiers such as "Chancellor", either. Maybe these data bits were all pulled from the same source and then treated differently when typeset according to unique regional requirements, the individual typesetter, the printshop involved, or whatever.

  2. You made a typo: You accidentally typed-in "PBS" for WCBS, while CBS is of course, the CBS flagship station.

Maybe you got confused because of "Sunrise Semester".

As for the listings, looks like Merv had a "theme show" with the cast of the "Carol Burnett Show", who were celebrating their show's fifth anniversary.

Also, "Bonanza", after eleven years on Sundays, had moved to Tuesdays. It would get cancelled the following January.

But then again, costar Dan Blocker had died before production of Season 14 began. Had either "Bonanza" stayed on Sundays, or if Dan Blocker had lived even with the move to Tuesdays, "Bonanza" might have stayed around for at least another season or two. But those two things happening at once sealed the show's fate.

    1. In the 1972-73 season, off-network reruns of "Bonanza" started being released to local affiliates and independent stations under the umbrella title "Ponderosa". NBC itself aired those repeats in prime- time using the same title during the summer hiatus of the 1971-72 TV season. Our local ABC station WEWS TV 5, as they were branded back then on-air, was the first station in Cleveland to clear the daily reruns, using its original" Bonanza" series title at this point.

    2. WEWS TV5 (also known as "Catch 5", the station's long time slogan) started carrying " Bonanza" reruns in the fall of 1973, airing in the afternoons at 4:00 p.m., bumping ABC repeats of "Love, American Style" to 11:00 a.m.. TV5 later moved the western to Sunday mornings, right before "The Gene Carroll Show".
