What's on TV? Thursday, April 19, 1962

As often as I do issues of the Minnesota State Edition, there's something about the Minneapolis-St. Paul TV Guides that makes them more special. Yes, it's nice from time to time to find out what we missed when WCCO and KMSP were engaged in their frequent network pre-emptions, but the issues with the basic five stations, even when they're from before I was watching TV, paint the portrait of the city in which I grew up. Sometimes it's because so little had changed (for example, Sea Hunt was on Channel 11 for as long as I could remember), other times it shows how the stations evolved over the years. Whatever the reason, it's always nice to go back home, even when it's only a trip down memory lane.

  1. Thought I'd tell you about KMSP's late night flick. Columbia Pictures released "He Stayed for Breakfast" Plotline: in Paris, the estranged wife of a wealthy banker is hiding a firy communist fugitive in her apartment. Loretta Young and Melvyn Douglas star. Also in the cast are Alan Marshal, Eugene Pallette, Una O'Connor, Leonid Kinskey, Trevor Bardette, Grady Sutton and Frank Sully. Trailer tag line: "M-M-M, NO WONDER HE STAYED FOR BREAKFAST - with a dish like this!" (Corny? perhaps, but a little titilation never hurts).

"Little Women" is, of course, an early David O. Selznick production (for RKO Radio) based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott; "The Gun That Won the West" is a Technicolor flick from Clover productions (ch. 11 could only get a B&W print). The cast includes Dennis Morgan, Paula Raymond and Richard Denning. Jane Withers is "The Holy Terror", the daughter of a Naval air officer that uncovers a spy ring while putting on a show for the troops. Anthony Martin (nee Tony) is her costar.

I can see how ch. 11 bunches shows together with medical dramas (Medic, Dr. Hudson's (Secret) Journal) and shows popular in the 50's that were still going strong (Superman, Whirlybirds) and syndie fare, too. A well-balanced diet of classic TV.

  2. This was almost a month after Jack Paar left "The Tonight Show". "Tonight" had to use guest hosts for six months after Paar left since the producers of "Who Do You Trust?" wouldn't let incoming "Tonight" emcee Johnny Carson out of his contract with them until it concluded at the end of that September.
